Thread: He Hid It!

    Default He Hid It!

OK, I have been driving my husband so nuts he hid my scale. It is gone.

For some odd reason I can't seem to lose the 5 pounds I gained after not exercising for 2 months following an accident early February. Now I'm back to exercising like a crazy person (gym for weights, pilates, body pump, etc.) AND hiking from 3 to 5 miles a day. I'm eating right. It's so odd, like my body wants to stay where it is. I'm stuck.

For three years I weighed 140, every day, no matter what. Now for months I've weighed 145 every day, no matter what. These stupid 5 pounds are driving me CRAZY. (No wonder he hid the scale, I'm a crazy person.)

Leaving for a hiking trip to the mountains tomorrow, if I come back fatter I don't know what I'll do.

I always thought that pouch test was silly, but maybe it's worth a try. Has anyone done it and seen results? Or are those studies right that you gain a little back after reaching goal? But after 3 years that seems nuts.

OK, rant over. Time to pack. Anywhere with mountains is my favorite place on earth. I almost signed up for a Whitewater Rafting trip until my daughter said, "Mom, did you forget you broke you neck?!?" So I'll stick to climbing mountains.

    Welcome!

Please keep in mind that this is a gastric sleeve forum, so technically, we have sleeves (not pouches). Only gastric bypass patients have stomach pouches with simple stomas. Click on the link below for the pouch test instructions.

So it wouldn't apply to a sleeve patient? I never paid attention when people mentioned it, thought it sounded dumb, but now I'm getting desperate.

sraebaer, I know you don't track. But do you have a very good sense of how many calories you're eating daily?

The reason I'm asking is that when I gain a few pounds above my target I cut back 300-400 calories/day from my daily maintenance calorie budget (1700 - 1750), and in a week or two or at most three the extra pounds are gone.

Bottom line -- I count calories. And protein, of course. And water. And fiber. Etc.

Also, remember that if you didn't exercise much for a few months you lost muscle and replaced it with fat. Now that you're exercising your ass off, you're building back muscle tissue. So you're losing fat and replacing it with muscle. But the scales can't tell the difference.

If this is true, I bet that if you keep on keeping on you're going to see the scales eventually drop.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to find out / know how many calories you're eating -- because I've seen you post here recently about struggling with sweets and other junk food lately at family gatherings, etc.

Just trying to think out loud with you and try to help.

No idea. But right now hubby is cooking ahi tuna with mixed veggies. How many calories do you eat in a day? And what do I do, weigh the tuna before I eat it and try to figure out the calories? (Some calorie bible somewhere?) Then I dip it in soy sauce, which probably has calories.

But you're right, I need to do something different because what I'm doing is not working. I just don't understand why it worked for three years.

I completed the 5-day pouch test in January 2016 to break a nasty habit of compulsively snacking on Luna Lemon Zest protein bars and lost 6 pounds in the process.

It didn't restore the feeling of tightness in my sleeve as it purportedly claims to do, but I did lose some pounds.

sraebaer -- go back and re-read my last post (I edited it after first posting it).

But yes -- you have to weigh / measure.

Then enter it all in My Fitness Pal. After a few weeks it's not hard at all. The app keeps a record of your "recent" and "frequent" foods. You'd be surprised how often you eat the same things over a few weeks' time.

Honest to God -- My Fitness Pal is how I maintain my weight. I plan what I'm going to eat every day. Then I put it into MFP. If I change or deviate from my plan, I adjust it that night or the next morning.

Seriously, I could NEVER maintain my weight if I didn't plan / track my food. It's also how I found out how much I can eat and not gain weight.

Don't be afraid of it. Just learn to do it. Try it.

If you search pouch reset it appears that it can assist also with the sleeve, not just the bypass. That being said, if you look at the rules, it appears to just bring you back to the early stages of your sleeve.

I mean, it looks legit to me. You knock out those cravings and go back to basics?! But I am still in the early phases. When I stall it is because I am eating too little!!!

Ann2, I LOVE my Fitness Pal and am faithfully entering my food, have been since December. This is how I KNOW how minimal the calories I am eating are (and I am trying to increase per day). I can see exactly what my protein is, carbs, fat and sugar....
And I also measure everything! It's to the point now, I can visually look at my piece of fish and know it's 2 oz. But I still measure... for good measure.

    Height: 5'8"

I love my body composition scale by Withings. It's not 100% accurate, but darn close to my DEXA body composition scan results.

After my old one went haywire I called the company and they offered me 25% discount on the latest model because my warranty had expired.

I got the BodyCardio which measures muscle, fat and bone mass!!! As well as it takes your pulse wave velocity so to track cardiovascular risks.

I only weigh myself once a week because it records my weight in my food tracking applications and I just don't want all that information there everyday or several times a day.

    Default Re: He Hid It!

You received lots of great advice from all our friends.

I do track my food sometimes, not every day like I did during my one year diet but it does help. I use Sparkpeople since 2012, I found it easier than MFP because I can find brands of what I'm using even when I switch countries. But it's almost the same website anyway.
You might be surprised, sometimes when I track I see that I don't eat enough!

Regarding the body composition scale, Shirl is right, I was thinking about that too when I was reading your post. It can help to give you an idea of how you are doing. Because even if you are a little heavier, if it's only muscle that you gained it's actually really good.
I have one in France and used it during my last trip in May. Funny thing is last year I was still too big when I was 6 months out and the body composition didn't work. Anyway, it did this time and I could see under my eyes how I had lots of water retention at first (long flight, normal) and then only ten days of "more protein" and I lost some fat%!! weight loss was not huge in ten days but still, knowing more about water/fat gives you a better perspective. It's not as accurate as the Dexa scan that you can do in hospital (or in specialized centers in the US) a friend got a groupon for a Dexa recently if you are interested, she paid around 30$ instead of 100$.

Stress: between your accident and the fact that you are newly retired, I think that you are dealing with lots of stress. Indeed it might not be obvious and we all have to deal with stress, but it is seriously impacting our weight. Even if our diet is perfect. Those past two weeks I have been under lots of stress from everywhere, the move, a friend's accident, my kid had to go to the ER and we are not sure yet what is wrong, we suspect some weird tropical disease, my allergic shock etc.
The weight I gained last week (thanks to meds!) is not gone completely yet even if I have been extra careful with my food intake. I even tracked a few days to make sure (again I was not eating enough...) but for sure the stress of this month is not helping.

Please be careful when you exercise, don't break your neck again, wear an helmet and just try to enjoy the beautiful nature and forget about the weight.

But I know where you are coming from, it drives me crazy too sometimes.

Usually people face a regain around 18 months out, since you passed that time, if I was you I wouldn't worry, it will go away.

    Take care!

Thanks everyone for all your support. I guess measuring for me is a mental thing, reminds me of the zillions of dollars and total failure I had with Weight Watchers hundreds of times. But I can do this! Love you all!

And freaking out about 5 pounds is way better than freaking out about 10, 20, 30, or 40, right? I've got this.
