"Today is another day to get it right!"
I was reading an interesting study yesterday in a French newspaper.
To make it short they were talking about the fact that obese people face so much prejudice in France because :
- obesity doubled since 1980 in the world...France did follow that path even if number are lowers than other countries
- sociologically there's more obesity in people who have no money (no kidding, protein and veggies are expensive! junk food cost nothing!)
- doctors think they are superior and don't treat their patients right , most of them still talk about willpower and obesity when obesity is a disease!
- the only place in the world where obesity is recognized as a factor for discrimination is the State of Michigan!
All that to say that even if your colleagues also work in an hospital they are ignorant.
Yes, obesity is a disease, and so far diets don't works and numbers and studies do show that only bariatric surgery work.
Yes there is side effects, but not all the patients have side effects. But they all lose weight.
I was vomiting all day for 3 days post-op, I was expecting it since anesthesia does that to me each time. I did feel nauseous for months too. But after the surgery I made sure to respect my portions, eat the right things and almost never got sick. In 17 months I was sick 3 times (one was a stomach flue, an other food intolerance, then I just got sick once probably some bad fish). It was all worth it. I never had any regrets!
People who don't have to deal with obesity themselves (or it's not around them) don't understand why we need that surgery.
You can either try to explain or just ignore them. Just try not to be offended, it's more about the fact that they have no clue than anything else...
Take care.

Hey Jenn! In all honesty, this is exactly why I told only a few non immediate family people. And I just have to wonder if they just prefer that the obesity related diseases take their toll and your quality of life? I have not had any issues with puking or pooping. (Well some lack of pooping as I have had some constipation but that is getting better.) As for puking, a few times when I overate I had some slimy discharge kind of like puking but not really. But other than that I have not puked once. Just tell them thanks for their concern but you've done your research and made your decision.
Gangsta!
I told co-workers, and only had any kick-back from one. Her concerns were genuine, as she had seen a close friend near death from bariatric surgery many years ago. I simply told her that if I don't do this, I'll die and she may have to help drag my dead, fat ass out of the building. She didn't say another word.
