Default Under 200lbs considering gastric sleeve

I am under 200lbs and I am 5'4"I need to lose about 70-75lbs not even for vanity but for health reasons. I have read whear some say they would never consider gastric sleeve for anything less than a 100lbs

Are there any sleevers that only needed to lose 75 or less? I like most have dieted for twenty years. I can lose 15-20 but it always creeps back on. I have never been able to lose any more than that and while I know this is extreme I want to live longer And my doctor told me I have the most dangerous kind of fat and I had to lose the weight.

Wanted to see if there is Anyone out there similar to me?

    Thank you in advance!

I am 5'3 and was 196lbs when I had gastric sleeve in March. I had mine done in Mexico though so I am not sure if insurance would cover you if you plan to go through them. I had inquired too about being concerned as my bmi was at 34.5 whether they had many people with that low of a bmi have surgery and her response was that they see it more and more now as people are being more pro-active about their weight. I too had tried many diets and would lose some but within a couple of months it was all back plus some. The final straw was when I had finally lost a fair amount and then I tried to quit smoking and within two months I gained it all back plus 20 lbs! I felt defeated and knew that it would probably take me a year of solid dieting to get me to a healthy weight and then I would probably gain it all back. My brother-in-law had had the surgery three years prior and was so excited with his results. He said it was the best decision he ever made and had been so frustrated with trying every diet out there and torturing himself. It isn't an easy road but I do find it much easier then dieting. You don't have the constant hunger and I don't have the constant cravings for junk. You fill up so quickly that after you have a few bites of meat you are full. Not saying I don't still crave junk at times but I don't feel deprived like I did when I was on a diet all the time. It is still a major lifestyle change and you will need to work at it but I so far am having much more success at losing weight then I ever did at dieting.

You didn't state if you are self-pay or insured. And if you weigh 'just under 200', what does that mean? At 199 you are at 35 bmi, which is obese. Do you have comorbidities - like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc? Insurance looks at those issues if you are under 40 bmi.

If you have insurance that will cover it, CHECK out with them the exact requirements. Every insurance company is different. This is a surgery and lifestyle change that only YOU can decide for yourself. It's something that you have to really want, and stick to it. I did it for health reasons and having a much better looking body now is a 'happy consequence' of all the hard work. I went from a 40.3 BMI to 28.3 BMI.

I knew no one who had this type of surgery so I searched online for info and support- and found this site. I knew I had to do something with my weight and health, and I was between a rock and a hard place. Being on high bp meds, cholesterol meds, having sleep apnea, and just about to start a diabetes med basically left me with the surgery to highly consider. I am OFF everything now (except the cpap machine... I am addicted to it ).

Surgery was end of March and I am still adjusting to the beginning of eating foods again (softer meats and veggies) and trying to eat a little more. But it's been hard. Worth it, but hard.

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds
    6 Month Weight: 169 (-2) BMI: 25.7 TOTAL LOST: 97 pounds

Well if you are self pay you could for sure have it done in Mexico if you were thinking of going that way. Like I said I was 196 and 5'3" and they told me it was quite common for people with that bmi to have it done and be pro-active. No whether or not that was a sales pitch I am not sure. I knew I would soon be suffering with health issues if I didn't do something with my weight issues and that was made me decide to go this route. I had never had much real success with dieting.

If you have the cash, you can find a surgeon to do anything.

But be assured that losing the weight is only the first step. Then you gotta learn how to keep it off. And expecting a sleeve ALONE to do all the work for you won't be the way to be successful long-term. That requires being more active, eating more nutritious food than you're probably (?) eating now, and learning how NOT to use food to medicate anxiety, stress, and other emotional discomforts.

That being said, it's a helluva lot easier to change your lifestyle after you've lost your excess weight.

FYI, I was sleeved nearly 3 years ago. I've lost 100 pounds pre- and post-op and have maintained at 135 pounds for the last 1.5 years. The sleeve really is a great tool -- but (see above) NOT the only tool you need to stay healthy and at a normal weight.

Click on the two links at the bottom of my signature block below to read about how I lost and have maintained my 100-pound weight loss.

Best wishes to you! And welcome.

Hello, my BMI is 39.5 and I am self pay and having my sleeve surgery done in Mexico next month. I want to lose about 65 lbs. may change my final goal weight to 175 which would be 85 lbs. I am tall and have always carried my weight really well... which has actually been a hindrance because I can pack, on the weight and then BOOM I am way over and nothing fits. Anyway... I decided to do this on my own. My insurance will not cover the surgery and I am not willing to jump through all the required hoops even if they did. This was the right path for me...

I wish you success in whatever you do. You are definitely in the right place to gain a wealth of knowledge and get a tremendous amount of encouragement and feedback.

My friend went through insurance with less than 70 pounds to lose and it was approved.

She qualified through insurance with a starting weight of 220 pounds (5'5 tall), BMI of 35, and high blood pressure as a comorbid condition. Her goal weight was 160 pounds, which essentially means she only wanted to lose 60 pounds with her sleeve.

Today she's down to 147 pounds, wearing a size 8 for the first time in her adult life, and is thrilled with her sleeve.

Hey Gigi, how tall are you? I'm 5'9" and my original goal weight was 180 (only because that's what I weighed as a senior in high school). I never in a million years thought I could get below 170, but here I am.

I still have a fairly big belly....so I think I can afford to shed another 15 lbs, which would put me around 150-155. That would really be weird to me....

    lol

125 at 5"4" would be quite skinny. Like a size 0. Go for it if it's what you want!
