    Default Hair loss fear....

I have very thin hair. I went through several rounds of chemo a few years back and when my hair came back it was very thin. I have to arrange it very carefully so my scalp doesn't show. A real pain in the butt. My question is how bad does the hair loss get with the sleeve procedure? At what stage does this happen? Is it caused from poor nutrition during the first few weeks? What stage does it start coming back in? I am terribly worried because I already have such thin hair. What should I be taking during this stage to help reduce the hair loss? Can anyone please help answer this?

Hair loss is because of a process called telogen effluvium that occurs in most people anywhere from 3 to 6 months post op. Basically, surgery shocks the system, traumatizing the hair follicles. Follicles go dormant and hair falls out.

This type of hair loss is temporary and normally subsides within a few months after it started. Some people sing the praises on biotin supplements and Progaine shampoo and conditioner, but time is the true factor that resolves it.

My surgery is in July and I am taking the biotin supplements now. I am not sure if this will help or not but I am trying to be proactive to reduce hair loss later. If I can get this weight off I am willing to wear a hat LOL I completely understand your concerns.

I had surgery on 1/3/17 and I had 2.5 months of rough complications after that. I have noticed that I have lost some hair, but it's really not that bad at all. I went through chemo and lost all my hair also, it's nothing like that!!! You will be fine! Prayers, well wishes, positive vibes, and hugs!

I'm two months out and no hair loss here. I have been on Biotin for almost two years though because medications I began taking back at that time did cause my thick hair to thin out. And it really thinned out. My hair thickened back up and I believe the Biotin is helping because I am still on my rheuamatoid drugs that caused the hair thinning in the first place. I take (2) 10,000 mcg a day.

And if it does fall out or thin out in the next several months, I know it will be only temporary, and I can live with it.

NO HAIR LOSS so far. I'm 4 mos out Wednesday. Told reason for hair loss is the surgery puts stress on your body and can cause this reaction. Heard from Woman and Men that lossed hair. It came back thicker. I have already been through a lot of medical trauma prior to surgery and experienced some hair loss and it's been coming back.

I took pre-natal and hair and nail supplements prior to and after surgery. If I lost any it was very little. I did notice little new hairs along the edges growing in like at 9 months but never really noticed it fall out in the first place. No clue why the pre-natal was told to me to take but someone here told me about it

It happens in about 40% of sleevers. You may get lucky. The more vitamins you take and the better nutrition you have will help a bit. Taking minimum 10,000 mcg of biotin may help. You can do all the right things and still have hair loss but it will grow back. Just be prepared that it may happen. I got mine around month 4 and while I still lose hair it is not as much now. I started taking biotin early so when it finally started to fall out my hair was already a lot thicker from the biotin. But the good news is that it will grow back (My sister is 5 /12 years post op and she lost a lot and she has her full head of hair back so it wasn't permanent.) and it is a small price to pay for being a healthy weight.

I have read numerous articles on hair loss, the one that makes the most sense to me is the one that explains that human beings do not need hair for survival (not anymore at least lol!) and when we go through a traumatic experience like sickness, famine (real or self-imposed like a nutrient deprived diet), surgery, hormonal changes, and or other traumas our hair follicles are the last to get the proper nutrients to keep hair looking healthy and lustrous, because the focus is to keep the major organs functioning well. Timing of shock and start or amount of hair loss may differ among individuals.

I have gone through several bouts of hair loss this past year. The worst was between 3-6 months post surgery. There are days I forget my vitamins, I don't drink enough water, get enough rest, and I don't eat a lot of protein and I believe that is cause for hair to start falling off again. It's a very delicate balance we have to live.

Hair is finally not falling as much or often and also noticing fullness coming back. I have tons of new hair growth, and I decided to go for a super shorter cut today! I'm feeling really liberated at the moment, but tomorrow when I wash and need to learn to restyle wil be another story lol!!!
