Question Suggestions? Bariatric vitamins make me nauseated/vomit.

I take a bariatric multi vitamin post surgery. I've taken multi vitamins with no problem prior to surgery though it was not this brand (bariatric advantage) or bariatric specific. I don't take every day which is starting to concern me. I'm going longer between because they have such a strong adverse effect on me. I get nauseated for about 10-20 minutes and sometimes it leads to vomiting. I've tried taking on an empty stomach, full stomach and staggering the time,... just after eating, 20 minutes after eating, an hour after eating. I consulted my primary doctor and she suggested that I take it at bedtime but I still had that yucky nausea. It is not a faint nausea,.. it is on the verge of vomiting nausea, or in some cases, I actually did the deed.

Has anyone else had this issue and figured out a way to resolve it?

Oh you poor thing! I have found that with many of the vitamins I had tried... and there are some I will not take. A relative sent me some bariatric vitamins and calcium she takes (gastric bypass 13 years ago) and I could not... and will not take them. My body will not tolerate them. I have found the ONLY thing that works for me are Centrum Vitamints. I was sick (literally sick) of vomiting my guts up after taking any of the vitamins and supplements I had purchased, which included liquid (which are now filed away in a bathroom linen cabinet.)

According to your profile you are five months post-surgery.

I've never taken the overpriced bariatric vitamins and my recent nutritional lab work results were all within normal limits. My surgeon's office recommends bariatric vitamins and even sells them, but I never fell for it.

I take over-the-counter drugstore supplements such as Centrum and store-brand vitamin D, calcium citrate, B12, and so on. I have also done well with two Flintstones complete chewable vitamins per day.

Centrum costs about $8 for a three-month supply. It is a lot better than $40 for a three-month supply of bariatric vitamins. The best thing is you only need to take one Centrum a day, rather than several bariatric vitamins per day.

Unless you've had a malabsorptive surgery such as the duodenal switch or a gastric bypass, there is no particular need for the bariatric vitamins. Those of us with sleeves or lap bands do just fine with regular multivitamins.

I'm nearly 3 years post-op, and I'm also on the Centrum band wagon. My surgeon's team said those were just fine. My blood tests also have done fine through Year 2. Am about to get my Year 3 blood panel done and will report results here.

I do take other supplements daily (probiotic, biotin, omega 3 fish oil capsule) or a few times a week (B12). But those were all my idea (not prescribed by bariatric surgeon).

Good luck to you. Main thing is to keep getting your blood tests done regularly. That (and how you're feeling) is how to stay on top of how well your food / supplements are working.

I also took the Bariatric Advantage multi vitamins and they made me sick too. Many times I would throw up from them. I switched to regular multi vitamins and I am fine now. I think that as long as you're taking a multi you're fine.

I hear you! I had stopped the BA chewables when I felt it was safe to swallow gel capsules because it tasted nasty!

Believe it, I have gone back to BA chewables because they have higher quality ingredients and because I have read in the lifelong long term aspect it is better. So I suck it up lol! My tastebuds have changed so it's not as bad as early on.

I do switch around sometimes, I have several different brands of multivitamins I use, if I don't feel like dealing with the chewables I do the gel caps and pierce them before swallowing (anything to help my sleeved digestive track lol!).

I wish BA made the multivitamins like they make their calcium chews! Those are yummi! But it's no advisable to take mv and calcium together... so I take my Biotin supplement which is also a yummi chewable to get rid of taste.

I have had the same issue with all the multivitamins I have tried. For me, it works best to take them right before I go to bed, that way the nausea doesn't ruin my whole day. I can't do Flintstones anymore. The Centrum Vitamints are OK, but a bit strong. I like the Centrum Flavor Bursts chewables, you can find them on Amazon or Target. I also have tried the Bariatric Fusion vitamins and they are also pretty good.
I hope you can find something that will work well for you.

The bariatric specific soft chews work best for me, they are like Starbursts and I can take on empty stomach. I did not have luck with chalky tablet versions, they sucked.

I take very few vitamins: a 50,000 Vit D on Sundays. An occasional B-12 sublingual (maybe one or two a month). An occasional Mg and K (maybe once a week-ish)

I take a multivitamin like once every few months.

I'm not a very good vitamin taker apparently.

I have been having a hard time complying with a vitamin plan. I have tried several types of vitamins. Tonight I am going to try and take them with pudding. See if they go down easier. I know vitamins are important especially since I am not eating enough to get the daily required nutrients.
