    Default Gastric sleeve

I go tuesday for my consultation to have the surgery. Im tired of struggling with my weight my whole life. Im worried about all that liquid and pureed foods for months. Is this very hard? AM I gonna be sick? My daughter is a senior and has lots of volleyball all year.

It's really not months of liquids but it definitely is a change. Worth it all. I am 147. Down from 263. Life changing

The gastric sleeve is not a quick fix to our weight struggles. Obesity is not curable, ever.

Yes, it can be put into remission by getting to a normal weight for your height, but due to having been fat at any period in your lifetime, your body and biochemical makeup will always be fighting to return to an obese set-point.

People have regained 100+ pounds with a gastric sleeve by returning to old habits and overeating slider foods such as crackers, chips, pretzels, popcorn, ice cream, shakes and cookies.

Months? I was on clear liquids for one week post-op, full liquids for another week, then pureed food for one week. That's a total of three weeks on a mechanically altered diet, not several months.

Definitely not months, and my suggestion is for you to review your surgeon's post-op instructions and food stages.

Personally while I tried to be a "good patient" I was eager to push through and test my food stages. I found that I could tolerate some foods better than others so I stayed on those longer or until I would get bored. One rule I did follow was to introduce single items and chew them well and wait for reaction. By one month I was on some soft or minced solids, but I loved my homemade protein shakes so I stayed on those well past what was needed. I often have them for breakfast and or as a pre/post workout protein recovery drink.

It is an adjustment but it is not unbearable. As RehabNurse said...it is not for months but for most people they are on solids between 3-4 weeks. There are some doctors that do require longer post op diets with no solids. You do have to make sure that you follow good eating and exercise habits to lose weight and keep it off. Good luck!

I'm twelve days post op and it is hard, yes. I have just started being able to get down the thicker stuff on the "full liquid" phase of the diet my program follows--yogurt and pudding. In five days I'll be seeing the dietitian to hopefully be cleared to move to soft goods and ground meat. That's really exciting, but who knows when my stomach will actually be able to handle it without pain. My partner has been taking care of me since I still can't really bend over and I get tired really easily.

On the other hand, on surgery day I weighed 266 and today I weigh 249.4. It's dramatic.

Yes, it's hard, at first. Is it worth it? Probably yes for most people.

If you need to be available for your daughter's senior year, you should wait until she graduates.

Hi I'm 1 week post op yes I feel you everyday I'm wondering if I'll be able to eat as well it is hard but one more week and I'll be clear to start
On soft food I can't wait I'm still trying to figure out when I get full because it still hurts when I zip the protein drinks I get a knot in my throat
But hopefully this goes away soon ... good luck and it's just a matter of believing in yourself that you'll be able to do it for at least three weeks ...

Wait?! Wait!?! For what -- to gain another 50 pounds?

I couldn't WAIT to get started. Even put myself on a 2.5 month diet prior to my surgeon's own pre-op diet.

For most people, after the first month it's not tough at all.

My advice: Stop waiting. Start living.

Yes, this is very hard. And I'm talking about the mental aspect of everything that's necessary for long term success. the surgery part is easy.

And yes, you might get sick, but then again you might not. I had a very easy, pain free, nausea free recovery, as do a lot of people.

As for liquids/pureed/soft foods, I was on them for a total of 2 months. But that's a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of my life. I would have happily been on liquids/purees for 6 months considering the end results I have achieved.

I say go for it, but know what you are getting into.....a very short period of surgery/recovery, followed by an awesome honeymoon period, followed by a LIFETIME of commitment to a new lifestyle (and that's the hard part)

All I meant re: waiting is that if you are your daughter's only ride to practice etc, or support system, or if you want to be at every volleyball game... You're gonna miss some activities and time doing pretty much anything ( two weeks at least) while you heal after the surgery. And you're not gonna be up and running full speed for a while after that. This is the reality of the thing. If you go into it knowing how it's going to affect your life, you'll be able to prepare.

There's not months of liquid or pureed food. My surgeon had specific instructions to never puree anything (every surgeon is different)! I think I had 2 weeks of liquids post op and then two weeks of soft foods. It seems like such a long time ago and it's only been 4 months. I can tell you in that short time I am living my life way more than I was before surgery!

Your biggest hurdle is mental. In the beginning, on liquids it feels weird not to chew. But it's mental.
At 4 months out I can eat anything. Do I? Nope. I avoid anything that is considered a slider food, I don't snack or graze. All of those things will land you in trouble.

    Surgery Day Weight 1/11: 300
    Month 1: -34 pounds, -25 inches
