    Default Realistic expectations?

    Hello all!!

I am new to this site!

I am scheduled to have my first appointment with my surgeon in June! I am SO excited to start this journey.

I am just wondering what I am looking at realistically? I am a 30 yr old female, 6'0 tall, weight as of 5/18/2017 is 318. Goal weight of 195. Is this a realistic weight for me to reach? Or am I already sitting myself up for failure?

    Welcome!

I would recommend you reach out to your nearest university to see if they do the DEXA Body Composition Scan. That will give you an idea of your muscle, fat, and bone mass ratios and what where your healthy ratios would fall.

Also, my daughter is 29 y.o., she is 5'10" and weighs approximately 185lbs and she looks fantastic!!! She is young of course, and has a body of an Amazonian! she is full of muscle ;-) I can only imagine you at 6' tall would be the same at 195lbs.

Welcome again! and reach out anytime!

I am 5-10, I weighed 300 on the day of surgery. One surgeon told me that 200 pounds is a realistic goal. I''ll be thrilled with that even though in reality I would like to be 175 or less. I'm 4 months out and down 65. I think I can go more than 100 pounds but we will see. Only time will tell.

    Surgery Day Weight 1/11: 300
    Month 1: -34 pounds, -25 inches

It's my observation (after being on this board for more than 3 years) that the weight you wind up at is pretty much a function of your determination and commitment.

And I'd say -- again, based on what I've seen others accomplish post-op -- that reaching your own goal weight is possible.

    Very best to you!

Rate of weight loss after bariatric surgery is tied to factors such as genetics, age, gender, ethnicity, certain pre-existing diseases, and one's starting weight on the day of surgery.

Certain groups of people generally lose their weight more rapidly such as males, females under the age of 35, super-obese patients (BMIs greater than 50), and "healthy fat folks" without any metabolic diseases.

And...other groups sometimes lose much more slowly such as older folks, menopausal women, racial/ethnic minorities, 'lightweights' who were in the high 100s/low 200s weight range on surgery day, and people with metabolic illnesses such as diabetes, PCOS, and hypothyroidism.

But here's an interesting tidbit...during the first year, the speed of weight loss after bariatric surgery is tied to genetics, at least during the first year. Speed and rate of weight loss after surgery is dictated by markers on chromosome 15.

Fortunate individuals with two copies of the chromosome 15 gene variant usually lose rapidly. People with one copy lose at an average speed, and the unfortunate souls with no copies of the gene variant usually become the non-responders or painfully slow losers.

Of course, it helps to maintain realistic expectations during your weight loss journey. Also, it doesn't matter how fast you lose...what matters is keeping the weight off for life. Even with a reduced size stomach, we can regain all our weight back by snacking on slurry foods such as chips, crackers, popcorn and cookies..

I'm 5'8 and 190 right now. (I was 265 end of December.) I had hoped to lose 100 lbs, get to 160, but I'll lose what will come off from here on out at my body's own pace. I am not in a race; not obsessing over how much more will come off. I KNOW I have time to do it and want to just get to the place where I think I will be comfortable and happy. It's only been 2 months today since I had surgery and I am ecstatic at how much has come off already.

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds
    6 Month Weight: 169 (-2) BMI: 25.7 TOTAL LOST: 97 pounds

According to the information in his signature block...

    1. his heaviest weight was 328
    2. his weight on surgery day (1/24/17) was 292
    3. his current weight is 217

We must also remember that males and heavier people generally lose more rapidly than others. Donald is a male with a starting weight that exceeded 300+ pounds.

The best tip I can give to anyone is not comparing yourself to others. Everyone will lose weight differently for me I drink a lot of fluids usually around 130 ounces a day while eating high protein low carbs but for others they may have to eat more carbs to find success. I also workout 2 hours a day with 1 hour of cardio and 1 hour of weight training. To correct something I haven't lost 100 pounds since surgery, since surgery I am down 81 pounds in just under 4 months but as RehabNurse noted I am also male and men tend to lose faster plus I was very over weight to start with as I had a BMI over 50. I suggest finding what works for you and sticking to it the plan also hydrate hydrate hydrate.
