Default Miss the trip to the local Ice Cream Shop

Summer + Warm Weather + Friends = Trip to get Soft Serve Ice Cream Cone from local shop.

Trips to the local ice cream shop for a vanilla cone were a summer tradition with friends and family. Not an all the time thing but few times a month. So far I have stayed away and plan to still but I would lie if I said I didn't miss it.

Enjoying a cone with friends and family was always a special thing, a social thing, a chance to visit with people. And of course you get some ice cream.

    Oh well...

I have been considering how I will handle these types of situations. I still want to be around others but so much of our lives are centered around food of some sort. I'm pretty social so I thought I would focus on the people and go around and talk to people, staying away from the food. I can hold babies or help others because both of my hands will now be free. I hate to see you give up this summer fun with family and friends. If you have a dog, maybe you would walk the dog and get him/her a treat instead?

I totally understand the missing of the social aspect of it. When you think about it what social gatherings do not involve food or alcohol of some sort? It is very hard. I haven't found it too hard yet but I know within a month it is going to be a issue for me once pool season hits. I am not a big drinker by any means but our summers are all about having the neighbors over for pool parties and sitting and having drinks. That is about the only time I ever drink is in the summer or on a warm winter vacation but I know not being able to have those drinks is going to be hard for me. I have been trying to think of an alcoholic drink that is not carbonated so I could at least have something to sip on and not feel left out.

That ice cream cone at McDonald's is actually ice milk and not that many calories. I remember it being just 3 weight watcher points. (Can you tell I'm a life time dieter?) Ask for a small one at your soft serve place. I lost all my weight but never deprived myself of a treat once in a while! Or walk to the ice cream place. I don't see how people who look at this as a diet, saying they will stay away from ____ forever, can be successful in the long run. Deprivation just leads to going out-of-control, how I got fat in the first place. The occasional treat won't kill you.

I am in social situations involving food ALL THE TIME. It's no big deal guys. No one is watching how much you eat, nor do they care. They are socializing and enjoying each other's company. When you are able to eat more (I'm over three years out) like I am, you just choose the right things. Look for the protein and veggies. Goes great with wine. (See, I am totally not the rule follower.) My life has not changed, and you newbies need to stop thinking it will. You will have a great new life as a regular sized person, enjoying food just like before, only less of it and the right stuff!

    What she said!

But yeah -- while you're still losing weight you'll need to (and want to) maximize your odds of losing ALL your excess weight. Fortunately, during the first 6-12 months post-op a lot of factors are aligned with your very big weight loss goals: (1) much lower ghrelin levels = much lower appetite; (2) sleeve is still healing = tighter restriction than you'll ever have again in your whole life; (3) excitement about the rapid weight loss you're already experiencing and a desire to keep riding that train all the way into the station.

Look at it this way: It's only one summer out of your life to "Just Say No" to things that might trigger your cravings and derail your progress. BTW, you're doing GREAT!

I may not be doing it exactly right but I have not denied myself anything. I just can not eat as much as I used to, not even close. I can't finish a small cone now, it is great. I look at the soft serve as full liquid, although it has no nutritional benefit... I always focus on protein first and getting my fluids in. Anything after that is fine, in moderation. You will be surprised that you will not be able to finish a small cone, and that is ok!!! Enjoy!

You can still go along to enjoy the socialization. Bring a protein bar along or a big jug of water to sip on. I go plenty of places with friends and don't indulge in whatever it is that's being consumed. Last time I went camping I brought along a S'more flavored Quest bar and literally roasted it in the fire in lieu of eating a real s'more. I recently went to a Derby Day party with tons of southern high-carb foods including potatoes, corn meal, pecan pie and mint juleps. I spent the whole time nibbling chicken, collard greens and consuming large quantities of water. Had a blast with my friends. My boyfriend is in AA and he socializes in bars and pool halls with his friends all the time. Drinks water and diet Coke.

You are going to be faced with and be surrounded by food that isn't on our postop diet plan for the rest of your life. You'll be a lot happier in the long run if you figure out how to be around it rather than try to avoid those situations. I frequently "exercise" my willpower by walking down the candy and cereal aisles and through the bakery sections at the grocery store. Beats any excercise in the gym when it comes to maintaining my weight loss.

I have been out socializing on many occasions. I even went to a football get together 9 days post op. There were crazy delicious appetizers everywhere. I drank my protein shake in a cup and just said I wasn't hungry. And now, I can go out with no problem. I may have a bite but mostly stick to what I need. I eat my meat and veggies and am happy about it. I go out very regularly with friends. No issues what so ever. But I do indulge in bites of stuff but never overdo it. And I always detox a bit the next day to compensate.

I hear you, and if you'd share that statement with my therapist she'd ask to think of ways eating ice cream makes you feel. After you go through all the positive and negative feelings, she'd focus on the positive. This is where the article below comes in handy, and if you take time to understand your life long relationship with food, in this case ice-cream, you may be able to develop a healthy outlook at a food item that once triggered sense of guilt or caused binge eating.

Definitely agree with others about abandoning the deprivation mentality we are so accustomed to, and probably the main culprit of our disease! But keep in mind enjoying too much of a good thing may be counterproductive or counterintuitive to your physical and mental healing around this food item, as well as your health and wellbeing and weight goals.

I hope you find balance along the way.

I don't miss the social aspect....I MISS THE DAMN ICE CREAM!!!! LOL

I found no sugar added ice cream called Enlightened....very dangerous, cause they're so yummy. If it wouldn't melt before you got to the ice cream place, you could take one with you....?

but nothing will change that desire for the soft serve cone. It'll be a constant fight with your brain for a long time....

Imma say this: Just because ice cream [or whatever else] is not a trigger food for you that doesn't send you off the rails for weeks or months DOES NOT MEAN everyone doesn't get in more trouble than you when they eat that/those food(s).

(I think that sentence is a quadruple negative. Not good writing. Point is, not everyone has the same reaction to the same foods.)

I ate a scoop of "no sugar added" ice cream last night. def not as satisfying as the real deal. But I'm not ready to risk the weight gain that will come if I start eating like I used to. Maybe when I go to maintenance, I'll start adding the good stuff back in graduallly to see how it goes.
