Default Three and a Half Years

Ok, I lost all my weight three years ago this summer. For over three years I have been bragging about how easy this whole journey was. Getting a little cocky about everything being perfect.

I think my honeymoon period lasted over three years. I easily lost all my weight and easily kept it off. While I was following the rules most of the time, I wasn't that careful, and weighed the exact same weight EVERY DAY, day after day. Kept in my normal BMI range without even trying. (OK, I love to exercise, but not track food.)

Now all of a sudden I have been gaining and losing the same 5 extra pounds for months. (Today I'm up 3.) It's probably because I had to stop exercising for 2 months after a broken neck. But it's still odd, as I am very careful about my eating. Or maybe exercise is especially important in this life-long journey. Things are crazy with the end of the school year, and with PT I'm not able to walk as much as I should. But school and PT are over May 25th, so I'll be ready to get back on track. Gym for yoga and weights, and my woods for hikes. I am still not permitted to run, maybe those 3 mile daily runs are what I'm missing.

I seriously thought after 3 1/2 years I had this down and would never have to worry about my weight again. WRONG.

sraebaer -- Thanks for this post. I bet the restrictions on your running are at the heart of this. However, I have heard from other online sleeved friends who are at our sleeve tenure and further out that beyond three years out things can get tricky, due to boredom, cockiness, sloppiness, injuries, medical issues, life stresses, etc.

Like you, at 2 years, 9 months post-op, I've maintained very well thus far. But one change I do notice in the last few months is that, post vacations or holiday celebrations, it takes longer to lose a couple of pounds than it used to. It used to take a week. Now it takes a month. And another thing -- when I lose the weight I have to be pretty stringent for another week or two to stabilize the lost weight.

I've always said about this dealio, "This is what's working -- FOR ME, FOR NOW, THUS FAR."

So, FOR NOW, what seems to work well for me is to be INCREDIBLY CONSISTENT (day after day, week after week) about following my new lifestyle -- the eating rules, the protein, the water, the exercise, the supplements, the sleep -- everything!

Sure am sending you good wishes on your continuing recovery after your neck fracture. That was a really, really big deal! You were so lucky.

P.S. And yes, I'm still tracking. It's been as helpful a tool to me as my sleeve. FOR ME. FOR NOW. THUS FAR.

We are so dependent on our habits and patterns of behavior that changes are just to difficult.

I hope you can get back to the grindstone soon.

I have the same five pound yo-yo. Up five then down five. I keep a watch on it. If it goes up more than five, then I cut back on snacks and increase exercise.
I think the best thing to keep in mind that we will ALWAYS be a gastric sleeve patient. Obesity is a disease. We cured our disease with surgery. We are obesity survivors. We keep fighting and we never give up.
We are successful because we hold ourselves accountable. We still get support from this forum. We know what works for us.

I'm just two months behind you and I feel you! The 3rd year is proving tough for me, too. I haven't had any injuries, but the boredom, the overconfidence, the compilation of stress, and a bit of laziness (mentally, not physically) have all started to catch up with me. I'm maintaining just a couple pounds more than I used to. Hovering at the top of my range rather than the bottom. My smallest jeans are still wearable but snug, and I'm eating crap more and more often and indulging in cocktails more than I should. I definitely need a kick in the ass.

Let's turn things around this summer and get back on track!!

We can do it, it's our summer! I'm in the same place, everything still fits, but probably not as loose as before.

I would argue that obesity is not curable...ever.

Yes, obesity can be put into remission by way of losing enough pounds to achieve a normal body weight. However, obesity can never really be cured. Those of us who were once formerly obese will always have different biochemistries in the context that our bodies almost always fight to regain weight after bariatric surgery once the honeymoon period ends.

As an example, assume there are two 40-year-old females who are both 5'6 tall, 150 pounds, with similar body fat percentages and activity levels. One woman has been weight-stable her entire adult life while the other woman once weighed 300 pounds. The formerly obese woman must be far more watchful in weight maintenance because her body is primed to regain.

We see it all the time with reversible bariatric procedures such as the lap-band and gastric balloon. Once the device is removed, the person regains the weight rapidly and fiercely. It all cannot be blamed on lack of willpower or 'poor choices' when the formerly fat person's brain and body chemistry is trying to return to his/her highest weight.

Reading everyone's posts about re-gain, maintenance and the disease of obesity... really makes me so glad that we have this outlet to share and learn. I can see that staying focused and accountable really seems to make the difference for many other Sleevers. It is scary, and I wish the surgery was a "fix all" but since it is not, I am glad to have found this site. Best of luck to everyone.

I so appreciate reading the experiences of the "seasoned veterans". I haven't had surgery yet, but my husband is worried that I'm not prepared for the realities of life after surgery. I assure him that I am, but everyday, as I read the comments of those of you with years of experience, I realize that you can only be just so much prepared. You don't know what your own journey will be until you get there yourself. Thank you for sharing with those of us who are just starting on the journey.

As long as you're on top of it I'm sure you'll lose it when you're back to your normal exercise routines. Just think of what running burns and that's why you've maintained based on your caloric intake. You've got this girl!

I agree with what everyone is saying. Everyone will have their own experiences for the journey. We have to get a hold on what makes us abuse ourselves, we have to develop new coping skills, retrain to have new appropiate behaviors.

this is why I don't want to start exercising quite yet. I don't want my weight to depend on it.

Once I'm satisfied with my wt loss and/or stop losing and ready to start maintenance, I'll prob go back to the gym (still have a year on my membership).
