Default 8 days since being sleeved, when can I take ibuprofen?

Hi guys, it's been 8 days since I was sleeved in Mexico. Does anyone know when I can resume taking NSAIDS like ibuprofen and Aleve? I have a painful situation going on with my arthritic knee and I need anti inflammatories in the worst way to help with swelling. I don't have a local sleeve surgeon to ask, so I was wondering if any of you knew the answer! Any info would be appreciated! Thanks, Patti

My doctor's info was pretty adamant no NSAIDS ever again. Gave us a list of alternatives. I know how you feel - Advil was my go to --hoping I will have success when needed with Tylenol.

My surgeon advised me to limit use of Ibuprofen or any NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which includes aspirin, advil, motrin, aleve, and celebrex because it may cause ulcers. He recommended Tylenol. I use Tylenol fast release gels (due our absorption limitations) when needed, and during my period I do use pamprin and midol which are acetaminophen based (just like Tylenol).

Other Bariatric patients that had surgeries like Gastric-By-Pass cannot take NSAIDs at all.

Always ask your nurse or doctor first before taking any medication.

I was told the same thing: NO NSAIDS (Motrin, aspirin, Aleve, (Advil) preferably EVER. With our tiny new stomach, you want to avoid anything to cause any ulcers or damage to it.
I worry about Tylenol because of a kidney issue, but if that's what I have to take when I need SOMETHING, I'll do it.
Hope you find some relief soon.

    Sorry, nope. No NSAIDs.

Can you talk to your surgeon about this -- even though he is in Mexico? Seems like this is pretty basic after-care. And after-care (of some kind) is surely something they deliver, eh?

Uh oh, your are not supposed to take NSAIDS after being sleeved. My surgeon told me to take Celebrex which is good for arthritis and not as harsh on your stomach along with Omeprazole to protect the lining. I also take a half a Lortab as needed. Lowest dose.

I am surprised that you did not know this as part of your pre-surgery seminar, etc..

    Best of luck to you.

The Celebrex is helping me quite a bit, suggest you look into it.

    Regards,

    Tommy

As a follow on, my surgeon is also concerned about ulcers and told me to stop the Celebrex if I feel any pain. He also stated that the risk is higher for people with full bypass rather than sleeve. He shunned advil, aleve but according to him Celebrex although a NSAID is not as harsh on the stomach lining. Plus the Omeproazole helps to also protect.

    Check this website out:

    https://www.goodrx.com/blog/is-celeb...han-ibuprofen/

    What about gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding?

The use of any NSAID has been associated with a 3- to 5-fold increase in the risk of stomach irritation, ulcer or bleeding. However, Celebrex is associated with a lower risk of bleeding. There are some more differences to know: with ibuprofen the higher the dose, the higher the risk of GI bleed (200 mg = less risk, 600 mg = more risk), but the risk of GI bleed does not increase with higher doses of celecoxib. Winner = Celebrex

u could try a topical solution.... Lidoderm® (lidocaine) patches are an additional effective alternative for providing pain relief. The active ingredient is an anesthetic, so it works as a numbing agent, and the patches can be applied once a day for up to 12 hours. Other topical agents available over-the-counter, such as IcyHot®, Salonpas® or Bengay®, consist of active ingredients including menthol, camphor, capsaicin, methyl salicylate, or some combination of these.

Try Tylenol, I was told I could take that. Hopefully your knee will improve as you lose weight. A lot of my aches and pains went away. I had the worst food pain that totally disappeared when I lost the weight.

We can't take NSAIDS with our new tiny tummys. I assume it could cause an ulcer, but I really have no idea why. I just do what I am told.

Hey Ghost, can you elaborate a bit more. I just started taking it last Friday and is the lowest dose.

I actually felt as if my heart was skipping beats (arrhythmia?) when taking it. I would get lightheaded then a rapid series of beats. I was warned when I started if my chest felt weird then to quit taking it. I took it for a month, no problems then filled a three month script and started having problems. I react to meds severely sometimes. But if your doc did not warn you then research it just to be aware of potential problems. Fortunately, I don't need any of that any longer. My knees feel awesome now.

I did take some Advil by mistake and I'm okay but I wouldn't do it again. Tylenol or a generic brand of acetaminophen is non-irritating to the stomach and it's all we can take.

my friend had an RNY over a year ago and had her gallbladder taken out. they had her on an NSAID for 2 days and she got an ulcer. Stay away!!!!

there are creams, such as Voltaren Gel (which my mom uses) which would do wonders for your knee. ask a dr!

I'm going to miss excedrin, my headaches are going to be AWFUL but it's better than the pain of an ulcer trust me
