That is a negative. Speak with your PCP and ask what you can take. Good luck!
Thanks everyone for your responses. I had no idea we couldn't take NSAIDs after being sleeved! My only instructions were to stop taking it pre op. I'm going to have to look in to the pain patches I guess, as my condition is chronic. Hopefully my knee will improve after losing a good deal of weight, and it won't be an issue anymore.
I don't know what kind of after-care Dr. Alamanza and his team provide. But as a post-op WLS patient you certainly need and deserve that kind of information and follow-up from your WLS usrgeon.
Again, I encourage you to contact them and ask them to send you ALL their post-op care instructions. Yes, a message board is helpful. But you shouldn't have to rely on an Internet message board for accurate and comprehensive post-op WLS self-care instructions.

I read that nsaids and ibuprophin cause holes in your stomach lining. We don't have much lining to lose! That is why we can't take those meds. I hope you find an alternative that works! I'm bummed about not taking it too.. but I'd rather lose weight!
I agree with Ann, you definitely should reach out to your surgeon's office if you haven't already. There is a lot of similar aftercare instruction from most conscientious surgeons/surgeon's offices, but there is by no means a standard across the board. Aftercare will have some differences not only surgeon to surgeon, but even patient to patient with the same surgeon. My dad had a sleeve a year after me and even though we used the same surgeon's office, his instructions pre and post had some differences from mine.
I will say that I was told no NSAIDS ever again. However, Tylenol seems to be working a lot better for me than before I lost weight.
I've taken ibuprofen since surgery, mostly for headaches or body aches, but def not as often as I did before surgery. I do try to stick to Tylenol, but sometimes I'll go straight for the ibuprofen .
my knees still hurt. If there's damage done from decades of obesity, that damage doesnt go away. Some of the pain is lessened because there's not as much weight on them, but they do still hurt.
My my back pain, however, has almost completely disappeared!

Update: I called my surgeons representative and she said we can take NSAIDS two weeks after surgery. She didn't sound very sure of herself, so I think I'll take everyone's advice and just stay away from them. I really don't want to get an ulcer in my stomach so staying away from NSAIDS sounds like the prudent thing to do. I can begin taking/swallowing pills again in another ten days, so I think I'll look in to some form of Tylenol for arthritis. It's never worked very well for me in the past, but maybe I'll have better luck now. In a couple more weeks after I've healed more I'll go see my orthopedic surgeon and investigate ways to address the Bakers Cyst behind my knee, and my knee arthritis in general.
Thanks so much to all of you for weighing in on this issue for me. Your help and experience is invaluable to me! Take care, Patti

Medications that are topical are generally systemic as well. Meaning they enter your body through your skin and then into your bloodstream. It still will eventually affect your stomach. There are warnings when taking Voltaren Gel that it can cause stomach ulcers and/or bleeding. I have asked my Dr about using it about a year ago and he told me No. He said anywhere from 10 - 30% of the gel gets into your system and he didnt' want me to take the risk. Some who do take it also take something to protect the stomach, like an Omeprozole (sp?). I have to avoid NSAIDs. So I passed on it. Just thought you should know.
I've been on 15mg of Mobic daily for over a year. My pcp, urgent care, and orthopedist are all basically like you can take it or you can suffer. I'm suffering still on it, but whatever. I did finally quit my beloved Goody's powders in December because, holy hell, NSAIDS galore, and those things really do hurt my tummy. Other than the Goody's upsetting my stomach, I haven't had any issues so far taking NSAIDS.
