Default 3 Years in and need to get back on track.

    Good Morning all,

I had my surgery 3 years ago and lost 60-65 lbs and did not reach my goal. (30 lbs from it at that point... now 50 lbs from it) After I plateaued it seemed impossible to loose any more weight. I exercise but my diet is definitely where I struggle. I have gained 20 lbs back, but I do still exercise 4 days a week. Any advise on how to get back on track. I have considered a liquid diet to jump start... its just a struggle mentally to get there.

Thanks for letting me bend your ears :-)

    T

I'm definitely right there with you! Old habits seem to come roaring back. I've gotten back to basics. At least you're excercising, and that's awesome!

I would suggest keeping a food log to help you figure out where your going wrong. Once you shine a light on the foods that are causing you to regain weight you can do 1 of 2 things.

    1) Eliminate all of them cold turkey
    2) Ween yourself off of them

Getting back to the basics from everything I have read is usually the best way to get back on track also if there are support group meetings in your area you might want to start attending them. Best of luck to you.

"It's a struggle mentally to get there."

I think you nailed it. It is indeed a mental struggle.

So why not get the MENTAL and EMOTIONAL help you need -- and find an effective therapist who has worked with bariatric patients to help them build the necessary lifestyle you need to lead to lose the rest of your excess weight and keep it off permanently?

That would be my very best advice to you.

The rest of it -- eat less, eat slower, eat only nutritious foods, drink enough water, take all your supplements and meds, etc. -- will follow when your mind and heart are aligned with your goals to weigh less and become healthier.

You CAN do this. All you need is to get your head in the right place. And keep it there. It sounds like you need some more support and resources than you've got now to do that.

I dunno who said this, but it's true: "If what you're doing isn't working, do something different."

    Very best wishes to you.

Unfortunately excercise does not either help you lose weight nor keep it off. Only what you put in your mouth does that. Try going back to basics. If you haven't already, I'd definitely seek additional emotional and mental health support. That's the number one "basic" that too often gets overlooked. You need to figure out why you became obese in the first place, address the issues behind your struggles and establish new behaviors and habits that allow you to accomplish your goals. The mental side of WLS plays a far bigger role in long term success than the physical part.

I'm just over three years postop myself and no way could I have maintained my 100 pound loss without the help of my therapist. But in case you don't have the resources to jump into professional therapy, you may check out www.smartrecovery.org and here are some books I found helpful along the way.....

I don't agree friend, I feel exercise helps me lose weight and keep it off. I know I couldn't not have done this without exercise. It helps my mind, body, and soul! It makes me feel so good and energetic. It's my stress reliever after teaching crazy middle-schoolers. When I don't exercise I gain, like when I broke my neck I didn't change my eating habits but couldn't exercise, which resulted in a gain.

I do like your book recommendations, which one was your favorite?

baby steps. my therapist said - put little to-do thoughts in your mind and you'd be surprised, you're actually doing the thing.
for example - i have to get up from this bed.
when you're up, i have to go and take a bath
when you're done bathing, i have to make a healthy breakfast.. and so on......
