Default I just want to taste my food...

A few days before surgery (4/5/17), my seasonal allergies kicked in. Sniffling, sneezing, congestion. On surgery day, I developed a raspy voice (before I was intubated), and a cough. The cough is terrible and feels sometimes like I have tiny marbles in my lungs, but the absolute worst is the fact that my congestion is so bad that I can't smell a darn thing. My sense of smell has always been my lame-o superpower, so to not be able to smell ANYTHING whatsoever, I feel like Superman with Kryptonite. It's so bad that I can't taste any of my mushy food. My allergy medicine doesn't help at all, and after 3 weeks of this, I'm starting to wonder if it's really just allergies. Fortunately, I have my 3-week post-op appointment tomorrow, so I'll ask the surgeon about it.

What did your doctor say? I have not heard of anyone losing their sense of smell post op. Hope it is just your allergies.

I hope it's just allergies too. My 3-week post-op appointment is later this afternoon. I wanted to consult with the surgeon before calling my family doctor.

Mine's the opposite. I can smell EVERYTHING, amplified... and let me say, some of these things DO NOT SMELL SO GREAT (food, outdoor smells, indoor smells ).
And nothing tastes the same to me.

    Sorry for this affliction.

But if you have really lost your sense of smell as a result of being sleeved, I expect to see you soon on CBS's 20 - 20 show. Because you'll have been the first to suffer this "complication."

In other words, I think this is a short-term dealio.

P.S. I've read many, many, many thousands of WLS message board posts. And I've never heard this one before.

I have a diminished sense of smell, too. But it started before the surgery. I took a taste of some ice cream that my daughter had, and I couldn't taste it at all! So weird.

it comes and goes for me, though. Depends on how congested I am at the time.

There is a man in our support group who said after surgery he totally lost his sense of smell and taste. He says a piece of pizza tastes like a piece of cardboard. No doctor can figure it out.

    Hope yours is allergies!!!

Damn! Sounds like this isn't a one-of-a-kind malady. Sorry. I hope your loss is only temporary.

My smell is "off" a little. The smell of some things that I liked before now make me want to heave. My taste sense is a little affected, too. Lots of foods taste bland. I think my nutritionist mentioned that smell and taste could be affected, but she said it was temporary. She didn't provide a timeline of it's duration.

This is coming at you from someone nearly 3 years post-op -- your eating / smelling / tasting / hunger sensations will change many times in the coming months post-op. Your early post-op experiences are NOT what they will be long-term. At least, not in my experience or in the experience of most WLS patients.

As suspected, it's "just" allergies. My doctor put me on prednisone to help clear out the congestion, and while it's not completely gone, I have gotten my sense of smell and taste back. This cough that I have is still here, but it's not as bad. They put me on an antibiotic as well (without even seeing me), and while I'm not sure it was necessary, I've been taking it anyway.

I think it's time for a different allergy medicine.
