    Default Foods to avoid/intolerances

    Hey Everyone!

I am reading, reading, reading as much as I can but I am starting to feel overwhelmed with what I should and shouldn't be eating/drinking post op (September)

What are your "GOLD" foods and what foods can you no longer tolerate?

I know everyone is different and I will see the dietician in July, but I just want to get some thoughts from people who have been through this.

    Thanks 😀

It's pretty simply, really....if its nutritious and promotes weight loss then eat it. If it's empty calories with little nutritional value and causes weight gain then don't eat it.

I eat protein, veggies, fruit and whole grains (in that order) every day. Plus drink a lot of water (100+ ounces of water) and take my vitamin supplements.

I stay away from white carbs.....sugar, alcohol, rice, potatoes, pasta, bread. I still eat these things, just on a very limited basis.

    I have no food intolerance....there's nothing I can't eat/drink except carbonation.

The only thing I've had issue with so far is white flaky fish. But most people tolerate that very well.

I'm not a fish eater anyway other than fried which was years ago in the midwest so that's not an issue. But for me I found that some things I hated before I love now and vice versa. I was about 7 months out or so and I decided I was hungry for an Arby's roast beef and BLEH that was the last time I did that. I got so sick within seconds it was horrible. I rarely got sick with anything I ate but there must be something in the buns that just didn't agree with me. I can tolerate everything else - soda of course is still a no no for me just cause I don't want to get into that habit again. This is just something that you'll figure out as you go along. I remember the first time I tried a scrambled egg - omg I got sick then too - I have never been an egg lover anyway - not by themselves so it's not a big deal to me. I will make an omelette once in awhile with low fat cheese and salsa - maybe add some taco and chorizo mix if I happen to have a container of it already made up in the fridge.

I have a preference for things to be more spicy now than before surgery, but that's kind of it. I don't seem to have any food intolerance. That is the problem; because I can pretty much eat anything I want now without issue, I have to be quite vigilant in ensuring that I make healthy choices & don't gorge on crap. Just because I can eat whatever doesn't mean I should.

I worked hard to get myself into the eating habit of pretty much protein, then veg, then sometimes a bit of fruit, and rarely starches. This is mostly because I went so long avoiding them while my stomach healed that even though I don't have a problem with them now, I don't have much taste for them anymore. Even if I do have some, it's usually a nibble.

With this being said, I don't completely restrict myself from any one particular food item. That is a diet, and I am not on a diet; now I just have healthy overall eating habits. It's like I tell my kids. "You have fuel foods, and treat foods. Fuel foods are delicious and keep our body healthy and have all the nutrients to allow us to take on the world. Treat foods taste yummy, but don't have any nutrients. Eat only treat foods, and you'll turn into a hibernating bear and have no energy or strength to do all the things you want to do. Eat fuel foods, keep treat foods for treats, and you'll have one happy body & happy mind that doesn't feel like it's missing out or denied anything."

    And never miss a vitamin!

Basically your nutritionist should give you a bariatric "bible" that tells you everything you can eat and when. For example, I was on protein drinks the first two weeks after surgery, then soft foods the third week, etc, until I was cleared for all foods at 6 weeks.

Then the basic rule is protein first, followed by veggies (if you have room), then other things (which you probably won't have room for.) My advice is my "rule of two," I try to stick to protein and veggies. This was a big lifestyle change for me because I got fat by eating carbs and hardly any protein or veggies. (Never really liked meat.) Then don't drink before, after, or with meals so you'll feel full longer. And take those vitamins! And exercise, my favorite part.

There is nothing I can't eat, I've never gotten sick in over three years, my stomach is a rock. So I have to be careful to eat the right stuff. I almost wish junk food made me sick, but no, I can eat anything.

Oh this is a question that is going to be hit or miss. Everyone is completely different. I could tolerate everything food wise. I just hurt if I ate too much or too fast. Never found anything that did not sit well. Even veggies, both raw and cooked gave me no issues. Now fluids were harder in the beginning. I did better with warm liquids. Still do but don't struggle with the cold like I used to. Good luck!

I don't seem to have any food intolerances. I try to stick to high protein, low fat foods as much as possible. I keep a detailed food diary/journal and track calories, protein, and fat. I really try to get through my days without having to drink a protein shake (I've come to hate them). I am staying away from carbs as much as possible as well.
