    Default Presurgical requirements?

Hi, I'm new and considering surgery.

Relevant info on me: I'm 31, female, and have been overweight/obese my entire life. I'm 5'7" and about 250 pounds. My highest weight was 270 (temporarily wheelchair bound after an accident), lowest weight was 175 (when I was doing manual labor all day every day and barely eating). My weight has varied a bit, but 240-255 seems to be my default. I have chronic knee and ankle problems resulting from the accident I mentioned. I have a sedentary job, but I'm pretty active outside work (walking and such at least an hour a day, 6 days a week).

Probably my biggest question is what testing is generally required. I've seen people mention sleep studies and EGDs. Are those routine, or just if there's some indication of a problem?

    Thank you!

Those are standard for everyone going through insurance. As is a Psych eval and cardiac review and probably a few others.

This is a long process but the education you gain during that time is invaluable. Soak it all in it only benefits you going forward.

As mentioned in the above comments, each doctor has their own list of pre-op tests to see if you are healthy to get through the surgery and afterwards. I remember HATING the idea of all of the tests (10 test, plus 6 meeting/lectures with a nutritionist), but once I did them, I realized that my fears/dread were unwarranted. Everything went smoothly and they weren't as bad as my fears. I still hated doing then, though. LOL.

Welcome to the forum, there are a lot of nice people on here who are helpful and knowledgeable.

The dreaded tests and hoop-jumping. Insurance requirements, for me, were having a BMI of 40 or more or 35 with 2 comorbidities; 3 months of nutritionist visits/weight management classes; psyche evaluation, and then the surgeon ordered ALL the tests: upper GI; he wanted to see my mammogram films; labs, h. pylori breath tests, echocardiogram and exrays. I didn't smoke ,or it would have been a 6 month wait.

I never thought I'd ever finish the tests, but I did, and had my surgery one month ago this Friday.
My body weight is similar to yours: I'm 5'8, first visit appt with surgeon weight was 261 (highest was 265 weeks before that visit), lost over 40 lbs on my pre op diet thru the nutritionist and now weigh 207.

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds
    6 Month Weight: 169 (-2) BMI: 25.7 TOTAL LOST: 97 pounds

Most insurance requires a BMI of 40 if you have no comorbidities. Lower if you have comorbidities. Varies by insurance. I calculated your height/weight at a 39.2 BMI. That being said, each insurance company is very different and some will not cover WLS at all. As for each surgeon, pre op requirements and diets vary greatly from one to the next. So you need to know who you are using and if you are attempting to go through insurance and that would be the best starting point for finding out what you need to do. Good luck!

This is coming from someone who has had the surgery (two weeks ago) and someone who used to work in the medical field itself. The hoop jumping sucks.. its a lot of work. However.. once it's done, it's done. Then it's onto that grind of getting back to living life the way you want.
