Default 6 months after surgery, clothing clothing clothing

I can't believe how much I have in my closets from size 5 to size 20. This is the 2nd time since surgery that I have cleaned out my closet. Many of my clothes are too big and I just need to stop wearing them. I am so confused about sizing now. I am wearing clothing that I have not be able to wear in 18 years! That is a good thing. I guess I need to rip the should pads out of some of my older things and wear it again.

I gave a large bag of very nice clothing to a family member. I asked beforehand and she said she would be happy to have the items. I only gave very nice and even new items to this person and I ask that she either use them or give them to others who could use them. She gave them to residents of a nursing home. I got the feeling she was insulted but took a passive aggressive approach to letting me know. These items were more suited towards working women. It's OK. I will take the next bag to Goodwill or The Salvation Army where they can find proper homes.

I am confused as to what is too big and what I should keep. I guess I am holding onto some bigger items "just in case".

Bad habits are hard to break, but I am working on it. I went from a size 20 to a 14 in less than 6 months. I am still amazed at this process.

I'm there now: Went from a size 22 pants and 2x/3x tops when I started the pre op requirements in December, to 12/14 size shorts and LG tops in the last few weeks since surgery.
I need more clothes but do not want to buy TOO much now. But I have NO long pants to wear now.

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds

I'm kind of confused too. I don't know what my size is though I've researched on line. Plus, I can't decide if I should wait a little more before I buy something. I guess I'll just wait a little longer.

I had a similar experience 5 years ago before the sleeve. After loosing about 30 pounds, a family member asked if I would give her my wardrobe that became too big. I was happy to do it except I live overseas and had to ship it back to France, it did cost me a lot to send it but since plus size clothing is so expensive in France I was happy to help. My relative is not working in an office like me so a few suits that were in really very good condition I gave directly to a woman's shelter (to help them get interviews to find jobs). A few months later I heard from an other relative that she complained that I didn't send anything "formal or nice". I was really surprised because I did send a few long dresses I used to wear for functions at work thinking she could use it too for a formal event but I didn't see the point in sending business suits, my relative has a farm and she wears only jeans!
Anyway, a few months later she did make comments again that "we didn't like the same colors" and that most of my clothing was American and she didn't like the cut or style.
That was the end of it for me.
When several months later I lost 30 more pounds, everything went to Goodwill except a few other suits I did put in a consignment store (they gave the money they made to a charity of my choice) . No complaints here and I even got a thank you I didn't get from my relative!!

I had my surgery in Asia and there's no Goodwill where I could give my plus size clothing because nobody here is as big as I was 18 months ago so right now I have huge piles of things too big ready to be packed by the movers that I will donate after we move. I won't be keeping big items because I will never be that big again. But a few things I liked I will keep for sentimental value.

I was also a clothes hoarder with clothes from sizes 8-18. So I was able to avoid shopping until recently. I finally had to break down this past week and buy 3 pairs of size 4 jeans. (I am only 4'11".) The pants I was wearing to work looked like I pooped in them. It was terrible. I donated all my old clothes to the salvation army. I know that people will get petty when you give them your clothes that are too big like it is an insult....but they are fine taking clothes you got too big for....because that means they're thinner than you. So I did not bother. Plus you can get a receipt and use it as a tax write off. But yes, the sizes drop quickly and it is better to only buy a few pieces until you are in maintenance.

I have been giving all my clothes to Goodwill. I have only kept one outfit and that was to show the before and after as I continue on my journey. Other than that as soon as they don't fit anymore, out the door they go. I don't need my clothes to remind me where I've been because I already know and I don't plan on going there again. I think that if we keep things for a "just in case" then you are still putting yourself in the danger zone of making it too easy to make that a reality because if you don't have the bigger clothes to put on then you have to work harder to stay in the smaller size clothes.

Know in your mind that you've got this and that you don't need to keep them "just in case"!

    Starting weight - 284
    Pre-Op weight - 228
    1 month out - 214
    2 months out - 205
    3 months out - 197
    4 months out - 193
    5 months out - 188
    6 months out - 181
    7 months out -
    8 months out -
    9 months out -
    10 months out -

Sizing is different with a lot of places. I know when I got to my lowest if I tried on a 0 or 1 at Old Navy in their jeans they were falling off of me literally I could take them on and off while they were still buttoned and zipped. Places like Walmart don't carry the small sizes of jeans in the stores so I would try on the larger ones and find ones I liked then go online to buy the smaller sizes. Kohl's is awesome for their clearance and sales. Love that place! My advice is wait. I got all excited a bought a bunch of 6's in jeans thinking whoohoo and before I could even wear them they were falling off of me and I was in 0 - 1.
Go by measurements now vs focusing on sizes. I think at least for me when I was heavy all I shopped for was "big" "cover that gut up" "whatever fits" so I didn't focus on sizes - it was whatever fit my fat ass. Now we want more form fitting clothes because we can! Check out jeans at the thrift shops - I love the distressed look anyway so it didn't kill me to pay 5 bucks for jeans at a thrift shop and cut them up to make them distressed. I know here at least the shops go from trash to nice depending on the area. We'll have better high end stuff in Scottsdale where there's money but overall the Phoenix metro area is a thrift shoppers dream! I work from home in my own business so I have little need for dresses and "office attire". I did buy some skirts and separates to wear just in case I had to meet with some new potential clients. My current clients get me dressed up one time and that's it - they are warned lol Then after that it's jeans or yoga pants.

One thing here and this is only my personal preference and opinion but don't donate to Goodwill or the Salvation Army - they mark the clothes up and make a profit. Find a local women's Veterans place to truly donate to. They're always in need of office attire for their ladies to go on interviews with and they don't profit from it. Again just my preference. One of the places here is called Stand Down (I think it's a national effort - Google for one in your area) but we as volunteers collect and clean and sort thousands and thousands of pairs of jeans every year and store them then once a year we hold an event for homeless vets or vets in need at the fairgrounds and pass them out to anyone that needs them along with haircuts and meals.

My journey has been AMAZING. My doctors are great and I look 10 years younger. I keep asking why it took me so long to decide on the surgery. Just prepare as much as you can for the changes you will encounter.

Try to surround yourself with positive supportive people. The jealous ones will show up and let you know how they feel. Be prepared!

Sue, the same has been true for me. I buy almost all of my clothes from snagit which is where local people sell their high end clothes on facebook. I bought 4 pairs of double zero Loft shorts yesterday. I was just hoping I'd be able to fit in them. They all are falling off of me. That is ridiculous. They are super cute though, so I'm going to wear them anyway. I have saved so much money and been able to buy some really nice expensive pieces for cheap by buying this way. So glad all the people that live around me have more money than sense ;-)

I'm close in weight to where you are now, and my first surgeon appointment weight was the same as yours. I'm still wearing the size 22 clothes that I had before, but they're literally falling off. I'm constantly pulling up my pants, because belts are uncomfortable. I have no idea what size I am now, and I know that I won't be this size (whatever it is) for very long. I don't want to buy a lot of new clothes that will just be too big again in a month or so, so I've decided to go to thrift and consignment shops, try on several sizes, and purchase a few "transitional" pieces that I can wear to work.

Tried on a pair of pre-surgery pants yesterday. They fell to the floor! It's crazy, I'm 12 weeks out from surgery this coming Thursday, and I'm almost down 70 lbs...... I'm starting to think I'm going to lose more weight than I thought. I only have one pair of jeans that actually fit well, and all my shirts are too big. I refuse to go buy a lot of clothes because everything I've seen, and everyone I've talked to says I will continue to lose weight for the next 7 - 9 months (maybe longer). I know it will slow at some point, but even if it slows significantly, I figure I'm going to end up below my goal weight. Its been a fun ride so far!

    Current Weight - 181 OMG
    Target Weight -205 That's right, 205!!!!

Thanks for sharing, now I don't feel like I need to hang on as I go through them pre-surgery, giving then to a half-way house to a group of women who are in need. I have been going through my closet for the past few weeks surgery is just a month away.
