    Question Am I too Old?

Thank you for letting me in your group. My 34 year old daughter had the sleeve procedure in Feb. of 2016. She has lost all the weight she needed to reach her goal and she looks and feels fabulous. She is so happy that she got the sleeve procedure even though she was scared. She feels I should consider it too. My question is am I too old? I am 57 right now and would probably be 58 before I could actually get the surgery date. Is that too old? I am not in real good health, severe sleep apnea and other issues that are weight related. I am at least 80lbs over weight. I believe I would be healthier without the weight and I sure would like to feel good about myself in my senior years. Just wondering if its too late....

I just had the procedure on April 5th. I will be 57 on April 23rd. I cannot imagine there would be any sort of age limitation on the procedure unless you were a poor candidate for any type of surgical procedure. Good luck and hope you will decide to do this if you feel it is right for you. I am very glad I did.

In the weight loss meetings I attend we have many people in their 60's prepping to go through the surgery so at 57 years young nope I don't see any problem with it.

Hi, I am 60 and my PCP suggested that I have it. Speak to your doctor and see what she/he suggests.

    Blessings!

Lots of older sleevers on here. Some even in their late 60's and early 70's. If this is something you are serious about, then I say go for it!

I am 62 and had the procedure six months ago. I have not experienced any age-related problems. I LOVE that I did this. I put it off after considering it 3 years earlier and am glad I did as I was going for the full gastric bypass. Letting the time go by led me to the sleeve and I'm so glad I did it. There is nothing to be lost having the procedure, you will sleep much better (no more sleep apnea for me) you will be healthier (no high blood pressure, no pre-diabetes) you will be able to move, sit, stand, breathe. Clothes will fit and actually be fun to buy. You will go into old age being happier and with a brighter outlook on life!

I just had my sleeve surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm 59. I find there are a lot of older people who are having it done. I have severe sleep apnea and think I'll be getting rid of my cpap machine soon, but after 7 years using it, I am sort of addicted to it. , but would love to stop it. I feel so much better already (I lost a good amount of weight on my 3 month pre op diet), so with everything I've lost since surgery, I got a jump start. You're not too old!

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds
    6 Month Weight: 169 (-2) BMI: 25.7 TOTAL LOST: 97 pounds

In many countries the age limit to get the procedure is 65 but in Mexico you can even get it when you are older (if your health is stable enough).
I can tell you that if that was me I would do it, whatever the age, even after 65.
My mother in law is having some major health issues (cancer survivor and she had knee surgery last year and must have the other one done next year) I wish she could had the sleeve to help her. But she is now over the age limit and won't travel to get her surgery. It's too bad because that would have helped her a lot in the long run. I love her and wish she can stay with us as long as possible but being morbidly obese is not going to help her to have a longer life and I'm really sad about it.

LOL! No, you're not too old.

I was sleeved at age 68. Lost 100 pounds. Now weigh 135 pounds and have maintained that weight to this day. I'm 71 years old now.

To read my story, click on the two links at the bottom of my signature block below.

BTW, life is amazing at age 71 when you aren't 100 pounds overweight.

I was 61 and never felt I was too old. At our hospital we are currently doing a research project on Bariatric/Geriatrics. There are lots of medical studies that show older folks who experience co-morbidities of being morbidly obese, have a longer and healthier life after bariatric surgery. It has resolved my diabetes, sleep apnea and hypertension. I am 67 years old and still rocking the weight loss Life is better than ever and I can't imagine being 145 pounds heavier and having this same quality of life.
Continued success and you'll make the right decision for yourself! Good luck to your daughter who is obviously a great role model for you!
