Much needed eye opener. Currently in my seventh month and in a month long stall. While inches are shrinking the weight is holding firm. I am reassessing my habits to see where I have slipped.

Ann, timely article. I was just thinking this and talking with a fellow bariatric co-worker about this information. I'll be 6 years out and it's a lot harder to feel like a "honeymooner" now. Old negative behaviors creep back in regarding using food for emotions and I'm starting to feel a tightness in my clothes that wasn't there before. I think I've gotten "complacent" and now it's harder to maintain the loss let alone not gain; if that makes sense. Nighttime eating is a problem for me and discipline in choices is another behavior that's creeping back. I actually printed out the article and will share it with my support group as it's a great reminder about how to remain diligent and look into other emotional reasons for regain. I am currently on the search for a counselor who can help me find those reasons and alternate more positive behaviors to deal with them.
    Thanks for the information

I'm so glad this article was useful to you, jerzeygirl. I hope your group finds it useful, too. I could read this every week for the rest of my life and benefit from doing so.

I suppose the good news is that this is the kind of work we've needed to do for a long, long time and now we get to do it. For me, everything contributes -- what I eat, how much I eat, how much (and how) I exercise, how active I am in everyday life, how consistently and well I hydrate and take my vitamins and supplements. And, of course, how well I'm able to minimize the stress I create for myself and how to deal most effectively with stressors I have little or no control over. Because those sure don't stop.

Hi there!! I'm so glad you stayed too! I totally understand about stress eating - that is still my middle name! Stress over everything - need something to comfort. I'm still working on that. I decided I am going to start doing yoga to help - I just have to find some other way to deal with it. I hope you are able to find a counselor who can help you! Take care my friend!

Melissa -- a year ago I started taking yoga classes. I'd done yoga in my twenties and very sporadically (while visiting friends, for example) over the years. But doing yoga this last year very consistently with a great teacher has produced so many benefits it's hard to fathom them all. The changes I've experienced -- greater strength, flexibility, calmness, focus -- are not only powerful but a bit mysterious. One of the oddest things is that the changes happened so slowly I didn't realize they were happening. Another thing is that it seems there's no end to yoga's benefits -- they just keep coming.

Yoga is so compatible with all our WLS goals. I hope you find a good teacher and that you love it, too.

Jeez, Kindle! That's the same article you've been posting about here forever!

    LOL!

Well, I guess it was just finally my time to "hear" it. And that it really seemed to apply so fully to my own WLS experience, too.

    Yeah, great minds!

Ann sweetie!!! Along with MBenson, two of the people I've known the longest here!

I was stalled for THREE YEARS at 230, I'd planned to get to 200. I gave up. I said, okay body, I hear ya, guess we're at equillibrium after 116 pounds gone.
    AND THEN!
I signed up to go on a cruise in January. Told myself I was not content to look "good", I wanted to look "great".
I've always known the secret to weight loss (for me, anyway) is the right combination of Diet, Exercise (Weight Lifting in my case) and Cardio.
My entire life, I've been able to do any combination of two at one time, but never all three. Mostly mediocre results.
Somehow, my brain was able to re-wire itself ("hey you have 90 days!" ...or maybe "hey you only have to do this for 90 days")...but I managed to do all three. At once. Finally!
And the weight came off just like it did when I first got sleeved. 25 pounds in six weeks, 30 in nine weeks.
And you know the phrase "last on, first off"? Well.....I was down to that last stubborn little bit of belly fat. I could see the faint outlines of a six pack in the mirror.
    SUCCESS BUILDS ON ITSELF!!
Cruise has been over for months but I'm still motivated to diet, exercise and hit the elliptical regularly.
I look better now at age 58 than I did at 40.
This has been one helluva year to remember...and it's only April!!

(the one "bad" thing: when I got stalled at 230 I bought a whole new wardrobe...now nothing fits!)

VeryLargeBob and MBenson -- it's so nice to have long-time compadres here. When I first got here (9 months before my own sleeve surgery) you guys were the vets. Bob, I remember your plastic surgery adventures, too. I'm so happy to still have access to you both. Thank you for hanging around.

We're no longer the newbies. But we have so many new trails we're breaking for the first time, years post-op. I learn new things every single week! My epiphanies continue, and they often replace earlier ones.

I would not give ANYTHING for the freedom and power that reaching a healthy weight and finally achieving a higher fitness level than I've had in decades has brought me. We are the luckiest people in the world!
