Red face I have been sleeved!!!! I'm on my way to a new me!

Hi all! I had my surgery on April 3, 2017. It has been a journey but a very positive one. I have lost a good amount of weight since the surgery. My only hangup is the heartburn and I still continue to have gas pain anytime I try to drink. Anything I swallow (currently liquids only) I get the gas pain but I do burp it out and feel better. Because if this, it is difficult to drink throughout the day because of the fear of the gas pain. Any suggestions????

It will get a little better and easier each day. Are you maybe drinking too fast?

    Christie13,

I possibly an drinking too fast. I try taking sips but even then once the liquids hits my stomach I get the gas pain. And the heartburn comes at any moment not only when drink but just sitting or laying down. I'm pleased with the weight loss by this darn heartburn!!! Ugh!!!!

Congrats! What are you taking for stomach acid? Anything as a preventative?
As for drinking if you haven't already tried, try warm liquids. For some reason those go down easier in the beginning. My dr told me that also things with flavor are easier to get down. Like water with crystal lite or broth or water with lemon.

It gets better with time but 2 tips that helped me: 1) don't drink directly from a water bottle, pour liquids into a cup/glass. When you sip from the cup/drink, less air will get into your stomach. 2) keep you mouth closed up as much as possible when drinking to prevent air getting into your stomach. It took me about 1.5 weeks before my stomach stopped being a major issue when I drank. I still get gas now when I eat/drink (I'm 3.5 weeks out), but nothing like I did before.

I was prescribed omeprazole for 1 month after surgery. Same with you? If not, you may want to get some. Also, I found drinking plain water difficult. However, green tea went down easier and other flavored water. Best of luck to you!

Oh, another tip, but you probably know this - don't use a straw to drink, it let's too much air into your stomach which causes gas.

Oh good gawsh yes, I went through that A LOT and still do to a much lesser degree. Take omeprezole every night and it will reduce that significantly. If you don't get it under control you may get nauseated and vomit some yucky sludge. When it reached that level I started taking my omeprezole diligently! That stuff is amazeballs!

You might also go ahead, buckle down and do miralax every night with that omeprezole or you might have issues in the bathroom.

    Good morning all!

I must admit, I was prescribed omeprazole but haven't taken it yet. I have been afraid to swallow the pill. I don't drink from straws. That is definitely a no no!!! Lol! I have nausea now with smells. I can't even tolerate the smell of the protein shakes! I have tried to drink both cool and warm liquids but both still give me gas. I have to try harder and be more diligent in learning my new stomach. I tell you guys it's not easy.

When did any of you begin doing sit ups or other strenuous exercises? I'm starting to feel the skin sag too. Maybe I'm rushing the healing process too much. I'm mixed up with frustration yet I'm excited.
    Reason: Misspelling

Is it a capsule? If so, I opened mine and mixed with a teaspoon of applesauce or sugar free pudding. My surgeon also said 6 weeks before strenuous exercise. Your doctor's office should be telling you all this stuff, suggest making a list of questions and making a call to them.

    Regards

    Hi Tommy1969,

Mine is a capsule. I tried to take it in applesauce too (opened capsule) and OMG!!! It was awful!!! So I just put my "big girl panties" on and took the capsule whole. Needlesstosay, since I started taking it, I feel so much better! The heartburn has been decreased tremendously. But my next issue I'm having is I can't eat!! Hard to take down 3 to 4 ounces of puree. I was advanced to a puree diet but its difficult.
