Default Getting enough protein if you are a vegetarian

    Hi all,
I'm not a huge meat eater (we eat mostly vegetarian at home) so I'm a bit worried about meeting my protein goals post-surgery. I also an not a fish or egg person. I will eat eggs in things, but not just eggs by themselves. I'm guessing that I will be drinking a fair amount of protein shakes and supplements to reach my protein goals. But, can you all offer any other suggestions for getting in enough protein post-op? I wonder if there's a website or book with bariatric friendly vegetarian recipes?

Can you eat yogurt? The Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt has 15 grams of protein and only 120 calories. Many flavors and the best taste and texture I have ever experienced with eating yogurt. I like to put them in the freezer for a couple hours as well for a treat.

The Premier protein shakes are also my go to for 30 grams of protein, I make sure I drink 1 a day if not 2.

Oh, and TOFU is a very good source for protein.

Check out You Tube for recipe ideas as well. Suggest searching VSG Vegetarian meals.

    Ok....again with Rehab.....what she said^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

As a Vegan, you are going to have a long road to losing. It's my opinion that protein derived from animal sources first is the best way to get it in. Plant sources are also very good, but, plant sources usually don't have as much bang for your buck per serving. Having said that, here's where I usually stir up the crap.

Protein shakes, bars, and other artificial means of ingesting protein are dabbling in deceptive advertising. For the most part, the amount of protein advertised per serving is not what your body metabolizes. Because of the protein isolate process to extract the proteins, key amino acids and enzymes are sacrificed and some of those are crucial in aiding your body in metabolizing 100% of the protein you ingest. That's a fact.

Animal and pure vegetable sources of protein all have those key amino acids and enzymes in tact. It's my opinion that your body is only able to metabolize about 70-75% of the advertised protein due to the lack of those elements. So, if the bar you're eating says 35 gr. of protein, more than likely, you are only metabolizing 25 or 26 grams of that advertised protein. Technically, the advertised amount is in the bar, but, they don't tell you that you won't actually use all of it. That's why I call it deceptive.

If you don't know whether or not you are getting protein isolates in your protein source, then read the label. It will clearly say, "soy protein isolates" or "wheat protein isolates", or "plant isolates". The further down the list of ingredients, the weaker the concentration.

If you just can't bring yourself to ingest animal proteins, then do like rehab shows and eat the items she lists...in copious amounts. I subsisted on lentils and cottage cheese for the first three months after the procedure and only had the dreaded three week stall during that time...however, once I started eating regular foods, I started down the protein bar road and noticed stall after stall after stall.

And for the rest of you, please take into account what I just typed. If you think you are getting in the required amount of protein and are utilizing shakes and bars for the majority of that intake, you probably need to rethink your protein delivery method. If nothing else, if you are are vegetarian and are stalling like hell, then give some serious thought to eating just one hamburger, steak, or fish filet. That will probably shock your system to the point that it will reset and the stall will bust.

Remember, you are sacrificing a ton in having this procedure and changing your lifestyle so radically. Don't let not eating animal proteins stand in the way of quick and permanent weight loss.
