Default BodPod tests and Results and another reason i hate teh BMI Calculater

    Good Morning All,

Yesterday I did a body composition test with a local business called BodPod. I was surprised and elated with the results. Seven years ago when I last was tested during a diet I was on at that time. I weighed 294 lbs and fat total according to the test was 104 lbs leaving me with 190 lbs of fat free body mass. The assumption that extreme weight loss leads to the loss of good lean muscle mass. That is why we must eat LOTS of protein so we can stop the rapid muscle loss. So Sunday, I weighed 234 lbs down from the 294 seven years ago and way down from the 341 I was last June. I assume at the time I at most had 195 lbs of fat free body mass which would have left me with 146 pounds of FAT. As of yesterday, I was down to 179 lbs of fat free muscle which is about 16 lbs of lean muscle loss out of the 107 pounds of total weight lost. But my fat mass dropped to 54.xx or 91/92 lbs of pure fat. These numbers leave me at 23.1% fat down from around 40+%. But the bad part is my BMI still reads at 30% which is obese.

I am 3.2%, about 15 lbs, of fat loss until I will be listed as moderately lean based on my current stats yet 6 points, or 45 lbs lost, from a normal BMI.

If you have a local vendor, go get the BodPod scan done, especially those of you are pre-op. It gives you a clear indication of your protein levels and how your body is relating with your new you. Ignore the Resting Metabolic Rate, we don't eat that many calories nor can we.

My doctor does this in his office before surgery. It's not a BodPod but basically generates the same information.

That's nice, I would suggest going back to redo it at 6 months out from surgery at least. I would think they would want to track you with that info as much as they could to monitor what type of loss you are experiencing. I cant imagine a practice not finding a benefit in this program. The one I am in currently does not do this test but I am going to talk to them about it.

I don't put too much merit in the BMI. If you have any kind of muscular build it is off.

It is imperative that I pay attention to the resting metabolic rate (RMR) since I am about two years out. Believe me when I say I can eat that many calories plus more. The sleeve relaxes and expands with each passing year. I am also hypothyroid.

In October 2016 I had hydrostatic body fat testing, which involved donning a swimsuit and laying in a warm tub of water while a technician determined my fat free mass. The results revealed my body fat percentage was 17.8%, which is lean for a female.

My RMR was determined to be 1430 calories per day. This is an estimate of my calorie burn if I were at rest all day. However, I eat anywhere from 1800 to 2100 calories per day because I lead an active lifestyle complete with running 30+ miles a week, occasional hiking, etc. I have maintained tight control of my weight in this calorie range; it fluctuates upward or downward by 1 pound at the most.

I could easily consume 3000+ calories a day if I did not engage in mindful eating. So for me, the RMR is an important number because I would need to reduce my caloric intake to that level if I ever became immobilized or inactive.

RN I think that is very true too. If you are into maintenance phase, RMR is essential to know and abide by. That is your bank account and you don't want to overdraw your account with a cupcake unless you budget for that cupcake. Until you get to maintenance mode; however, we need to pay attention to protein, carbs and fat(the macro nutrients) more than calories because if you follow the guidelines your calorie intake falls into line anyways. But if you over spend on carb calories and change your budget on protein, lean muscle mass will be your overdraw penalty. None of us can afford to lose lean muscle mass.

I'd be terrified to do one of those scans if they tell you you're thinner than the BMI chart does. I'm at 17.5 on the BMI, and dammit, I don't wanna be this low!
