    Default Joint/Muscle/Bone issues??

I was doing a great job with running and had gotten up to running about 30 minutes straight. I was not running too fast or anything nuts but my hips started hurting. So bad that I was actually walking funny. So I stopped running. Added 1000 iu of D3 vitamin to my list of daily pills I take. Gave my body time to heal. I have tried to go back to running twice in the past 8 weeks. Each time I could feel the pain again in my hips so I stopped and went back to walking. I don't think it is my muscle but rather the bone or joint. It is so weird. I have lost all this weight so I should be able to exercise easier. I have never really had problems with exercise. Even when I was heavy. I have always been able to work my way into jogging. Do you think this is an issue with surgery, vitamin deficiency, or just long term weight on my bones/joints? I really, really love running. I want to get back to it and start doing races again. Do I need a longer period of healing? Today I walked and did Pilates. Maybe the Pilates will strengthen up my hips and joints?

    Hi Christie,
Sounds to me like it is most likely issues with your hip joint, like arthritis. I would follow-up with your PCP and get a hip x-ray to be certain. Pilates should help some, but you may also want to consider getting a massage. It has helped me a lot with my back and hip pain.

I use an elliptical machine because my joints just cant take the abuse I inflicted on my body over the years.

Now, as I started walking post-op I had hip pain too. As my body dimensions changed it seemed to clear up significantly.

Are you stretching before and after your runs? When was the last time you replaced your running shoes? I too was an avid runner and I know how important stretching and replacing your shoes is. Just a thought. Good luck!

    Christie,

Everyone has given great info. I would also suggest taking glucosamine. After I was running for a while, I developed pain in my hip joint and could not run. I went to the local health store and was given glucosamine to try. It took about 3 days for me to notice a difference. Within a week, I was able to resume all previous activities--namely, running. My understanding is that it helps to keep joints lubricated.

    Best of luck to you.

Hi Christie, I have hip issues and have been struggling. Surgeon actually released me to take 1 advil a day with an omeprazole, I started yesterday. I am very happy about this because my primary put me on Vicodin which I really don't want to take. My surgeon also told me to discuss Celebrex with my primary which I will be doing this Friday. I am praying the Celebrex is going to be the med that can help me short term as I lose the weight. All of my weight loss has come with minimal exercise and I am desperately wanting to get more active. I hope you feel better soon!

Tommy your WL surgeon gave you the ok for the advil? I'm asking because mine told me ibouprofen is an absolute no no once you have a sleeve. Just curious if its just my surgeon saying this or something else.

Yes, my surgeon. He wants me to be cautious however as his concern is possible ulcers along the incision line. He told me if I start to feel any pain to stop immediately. He said that he is much more restrictive with patients who have the bypass.

I've read many articles where some surgeons are ok with ibuprofen and sleeve and some are not. He also recommended that I speak to my primary as he would prefer that I take Celebrex. Also, he mandated that I must take omeprazole with it to help protect my stomach.

He asked me how much I took pre surgery and I told him that I had been taking 2 Aleves a day for years so I think that he took that into consideration as I didn't have any adverse affect from that when he did the endoscopy.

I think he would prefer that I didn't and I would too but I'm suffering. I hope that Celebrex will be a game changer.

I'm still 425 so expect once I lose more weight it will help but dropping 54 so far has had no positive impacts on my hips. Yet, I am still hopeful.

    Regards

Christie are you taking any B12 supplements. I had not gone to a doctor prior to my surgery but when I was at my neurologist and I told him I had had the surgery he told me to make sure to take B12 because I would have leg pain from the rapid weight loss and your body often can't produce enough of it. I noticed a big difference as soon as I started taking it. Not sure if it would help with hip pain but it might.

No I had not been taking it prior. I assumed the amount in my bariatric multivitamin was enough. I am only taking 1000 is now and I am going to up my dosage based on your recommendations. Thank you!

I have a coworker who is a fitness health guru She says running is bad for your body with the pounding that you put on joints She is fit as can be and doesn't run. She does all kinds of crazy other workouts but she makes sure she doesn't tear up her body But that's one persons input

But I understand what you mean about loosing weight so we can do things we couldn't before Age doesn't help us either. I'm dealing with a herniated disc in my neck right now. No clue how but honestly think it was from my chiropractor who does the cranking on your neck. I am in so much pain I'm looking for all kinds of ways to help myself. I was referred to a massage therapist. Turns out she also does myotherapy, never heard of it! But she knows her stuff! She explained how sometimes when get injured our muscles work against the injury which ends up pulling everything out of whack She had a bad experience with a chiro that actually cracked or dislocated a rib.

She researched pain free chiro and came across NUCCA practice and referred me there. Holy Buckets! it's amazing how much better my entire body feels! The two of them refer patients to each other becAuse the combination of myotherapy and NUCCA help tremendously.

So that's my two cents. I feel so great I want to share it with others!
