Cool I slept last night! Day 5 post-op.

I slept last night. It wasn't a straight-through-the-night extravaganza that I am so used to, but I slept 4 hours; rolled for a half hour; slept another 2 hours and got up before 6 am.

I took TWO melatonin pills instead of one. It seemed to work and I will be doing this again tonight.

I see my doctor this morning for a 5 day post op visit. My pain isn't much (it never really was); my incisions seem to have healed and are just tender; I have been sipping water and have been urinating but still no real GAS coming out. The GasX strips are good and I have taken them when I feel complete pressure in my abdomen (yet nothing ever emits). I still feel the side effects of anesthesia... fatigue more so than usual. Nap day later on.

Last night at dinner was rough. I had my 1 tablespoon of Chinese Egg Drop Soup and don't know if I can sit at the table with my family for a meal for a while. I think I was actually hungry? It took all I had to contain myself from leaping across the kitchen table and grab the fork and taco salad from my husband and scarf it down! Next I was eyeing my youngest daughter's bean burrito and I was getting so upset. (Poor Jenni looked a little put off too. She is physically slower than an army of turtles marching through molassess on any given day, and I told her that she'd BETTER guard that burrito with her dear life -or momma would make it disappear!!) I sipped my spoonful of soup down and left the table nearly crying. WTH is that about all about? I may have felt hungry... but NOT THAT hungry. Its too hard to sit with them at dinner. Maybe soon.

I, fortunately, did not have a family to feed. I had made and frozen four different meals for my husband which amounted to 16 servings, so I knew I was home safe in not having to make him dinners. I did not sit with him while he ate because I felt deprived. I have always from the start had "head hunger" which is probably what you're experiencing. That is if you are getting the correct amount of protein. When I have not had enough protein, I start to crave all sorts of things. The good news is even if you wanted to you could not really eat those things that your family is having. That saved me in the early times.

Glad you slept better. I take two melatonins too. I guess i should have mentioned, sorry. I couldn't sit with my family either for ahile. My head hunger would drive me crazy. That is much better now and it helps the inflammation that mimics hunger pains and causes the growling sounds are gone with prilosec and used Nexium in the beginning. Hope you have a good day

I broke down and cried myself last night. I haven't even had surgery yet (5th), but during this liquid phase begin to realize my affair with food was ending. At this point I think I will be very grateful when I can nibble on a piece of lettuce. LOL Hang in there, I know what you are going through and I 'm not even at your point through the process yet.

It gets better Lori. Why only a tablespoon of egg drop soup? You can have more than that. Glad the melatonin helped some.

My liquid instructions said to start at 1/8 cup of broth (1 tbs). and can increase to 1/4 in the next week, but to not go over 1/4 cup. I was HUNGRY at 4:00 today and had my 1/4 cup! Screw 1 tbs! I just came back from eating 1 tbs of jello and waited until dinner was over for Dennis and the girls. Jenni was still out there eating and I ate my jello and got out of there before having repeats of last night's dinner and wanting to inhale Jenni's dinner! Oh geez, I'm so bad.

try not to focus on what u cannot have... honestly, u wouldn't b able to eat it anyway without serious repercussions.... just enjoy what ur allowed to eat and be finished with it.. do not torment urself... u will b able to eat that stuff in due time... I know u are still in ur liquids phase, but use this time to learn ur portion control and DO NOT OVER DO IT!!!!!!! I cannot stress that enough....use ur sleeve the way it was intended and b very mindful of the restriction.... i promise u it will work for u if u work with it properly...good luck...

You're SO right about not focusing on what I can't eat. One day I'll be able to have a taste, but not yet.
Now I'm wondering about my soup. 1/4 cup is good and I don't want to overdo it. Can you gain weight from 1/4 cup of soup? I'm having fears now (after seeing my pictures of my stretched out stomach from surgery) that it's going to be stretched out by my soup intake. Am I crazy?

Yes you are crazy stretching of your stomach if it happens will be from constant over eating once you are fully healed. It wont come early on from the little bit we are allowed to consume.

Thanks Donald, good to know. I'm obsessed all of a sudden. I guess it's because I KNOW I can easily consume more than 1/4 cup of soup easily, and never felt full when I approached my final spoonful. I could have kept going...

How did you feel 5 minutes after that last bite, I'm going to guess you were pretty full I always feel more full 5 minutes after putting my fork down and walking away then I did while having that last bite. That is why I now always stop eating 3 bites before I think I'm going to be full because 5 minutes later sure enough I am full, opposed to being a little uncomfortably full. I will give you another secret I use and that is I do not step on the scale except my normal time every Wednesday I caught myself my first 2 weeks post op checking it daily which is a horrible habit to have. Even once a week is a little to often but it is so ingrained in me from my weight watcher days I still do it.

perhaps u feel like u could have kept going, however... I caution u... do not... even 1 bite too much can make u feel very nauseous..even if u measure everything, do not feel like u have to finish it... let ur body tell u ... if u have 2 bites left on ur plate, but u feel the restriction of the sleeve.. stop eating!!!!!!.. most of us have been conditioned from an early age not to waste food or to clear our plates.... that is probably how most of us became overweight to begin with... listen to ur sleeve... it will tell u when to stop... and that is it.. do not push it...

absolutely agreed.... It takes ur body 20 minutes to realize it is full... ( pre op anyway)....by the time u feel full, u have already consumed more than u should....ur body can only process so much food at one time.... anything else... no matter what it is gets stored as fat.... that is y the restriction u feel from the sleeve is so important.... and thats y this works...

After last night's soup-fest, having the full 1/4 cup, I didn't feel full. I stopped, but never felt a sign.
I had 1/4 cup of jello a while ago and definitely felt this "different" feeling in my stomach. It was a tight, squeezing (?) sensation, and I'm sure that is the sign that I've had too much. (I had drank a premier protein shake a couple hours earlier too.) No nausea, just a couple pains and then I walked out doors for 1/2 a mile. I need to become acquainted with my new body part and finally today, I think I've met "her".

Honestly, I couldn't sit with my family while on liquids or soft foods. I didn't sit with them until I could have proteins. It was hard, I have a 9 year old and meal time is family time. But before I knew it I was sitting with them.
