Unhappy Has anyone cheated on the 2-week liquid pre-op diet?

I'm not sure how much of this I can take. I'm only on day 2 and the sweetness of all the liquids I can have is nauseating. I only got down on shake yesterday, the rest was flavored water and a couple of sugar free popsicles.

Thanks for the encouragement. Just what I needed. However, if anyone has any suggestions regarding non-sweet liquid meal replacements, please share! LOL

I did I ate a bagel every third day during my 2 week liquid pre op. After my surgery my surgeon told me I did a very good job at shrinking the size of my liver down. As far as the sweetness of the shakes they are a bit thick so u can add some water to them to help out in that area not much just a couple ounces goes a long way.

My surgery is in 5 hours and I have been on that liquid diet for 10 days! I didn't cheat- cheat, per se, but I did have a premier chocolate shake once. I had to. If I can do it, you can do it. I have felt like a concentration camp victim the last week and a half... seriously. I would like to say that I never, ever, want to see another ISOPURE ZERO CARB protein drink again, but I have to drink this nasty stuff once I get home for the next week! UGH!

Hang in there, YOU CAN DO THIS!

Hi Doole mom, I completely agree with Rcupps, A protein drink I like is premier protein, not overly sweet. If you have a blender you can blend ice and make like a smoothie, will tone down any drink. You can do that will any drink or mix with water like Don mentioned. I didn't cheat and it's important to follow your surgeons pre and post-op orders. This will help decrease the risk of surgery and if you can follow this then there is a higher probability you can make long term changes needed for permanent weight loss.
Each surgeon uses different pre & postop orders and each surgeon gives each patient different instructions before surgery. What is your pre-op instructions?

You know you can make your own protein shakes from fresh, organic and sustainable (my preference) and nutrient rich products.

I went on countless crash diets throughout my life, but somehow this two-week liver cleanse diet made me nervous and anxious. So self imposed a preop diet of my own 6 weeks prior. I started slow, with one meal replacement then at two weeks I replaced two meals until the 3-day liquid preop diet.

To be frank it is all mental. Obviously you have plenty or reserved fat to last you months! So you are not going to starve. What you are experiencing now will be the same mental hunger anguish you will experience post op. What are you going to do then? Cheat? If you introduce the wrong foods to your new sleeved stomach it may or may not be detrimental to your life, but it will be harder for you to maintain weight loss in the long run.

The ghrelin hormone may be playing some part in your feelings of depravation right now, but post op some if not most say they don't feel hunger. I'm here to tell you I DID and DO. I have learned the difference between real physical hunger, which I get 3-4 hours after my last meal now. First couple of months was 2-3 hours because I was eating much less, think 2-4 tablespoons of food! Now I eat about a cup or a bit more at a meal.

You can do this! You will have to start parenting yourself and be disciplined around your food choices.

I have been on this forum just over a year and TRUST me you are not alone! We all, well most of us, had to do some form of preop diet. A few folks here didn't have to do anything except stop eating after midnight, but honestly do you really want to add a risk to your operation? I certainly didn't!

You got this! Do whatever it takes to distract yourself from the thoughts of food.

    Wishing you continued success.

    Thanks Shirl,

I'm not so much hungry as I am nauseous from the options. I know the headache is due to lack of protein. I am drinking plenty, just having a hard time downing the meal replacements. I am using the premier protein shakes. Just getting used to it. I know it is all for my own good and I will prevail!!!!

No, I followed by pre-op diet exactly as I was told. You could try adding Torani syrup to your beverages. It's not thick like maple syrup, it's similar to what they add to flavored coffee. At the stores by me, it's in the aisle with the coffee. They have various flavors, sugar free and regular.

I am not supposed to start my pre-op diet for a few weeks, but I just found out that slim fast premade drinks are ok (according to my surgeon) and I really like their high protein ones and I can usually last awhile without being hungry when I drink them. Also they don't usually taste too bad (or too sweet) to me. Thanks for asking this question though because I have been terrified since the day I scheduled my surgery for this pre-op diet.

Don't Cheat! You want to put your body in the best possible condition that you can for your doctor to have a successful surgery and reduce the risk of complications! Need to shrink the liver!! It gets easier each day! I'm sorry but when I hear this is really angers me because you are doing this for you so do it right! Best of luck to you!!!

You can do sugar free gelatin as well. Once you have the surgery it gets much much easier, totally worth the 2 pre op weeks. Chicken broth was also a big go to for me.

Ok folks....step away from the ledge....lol

The preop diet is STRICTLY for shrinking your liver so that the part of your stomach that is covered by your liver is more easily accessible. Period.

I made it all the way to San Diego on my diet. Five day liquid. Once I got to San Diego, I broke down and got some chicken breast at the Chilis in the San Diego airport. This was the day before surgery. I did just fine and so will you. There are many, many surgeons that don't ask for any preop diet.

Again, this diet is strictly for the convenience of the surgeon and has absolutely zero bearing on the success of the surgery. I'm not advocating you cheat, but, I did and if you do, it definitely will not be the end of the world......

2 week is a long time pre-surgery. I was lucky in that my surgeon did not require a pre-op diet with the exception of liquids starting 8 am the day before surgery.
