It took me months to stop my PPI. But I'm getting the book "The Acid Watcher Diet"today! May be there's a few tricks I don't know yet...

After my first (and only) incident with acid reflux 3 days postop, my internist recommended an Acid Reflux & GERD prevention diet, along with sleeping on a 6-10" incline would prevent most heartburn symptoms from AR and G.

My pre-op exam did show an issue with my LES (lower esophageal sphincter) which is the valve closing the top of the stomach, like many people with reflux, it was not closing. I was not even aware I had a problem. I had several discussions about that with my surgeon because if I didn't have really any issues pre-op, except if I had spicy food or worth when I was pregnant, I was just worried it would be worth post-op. I was told it's impossible to predict. Right after surgery I had awful reflux, drinking water could trigger it. So the PPI was the only way.
Some patients can stop their PPI early, around one month out when the lining is healed. I tried, I couldn't. I tried several times but it took almost six months to cut my dosage in half then 13 months to stop it completly. My doc did say that losing a lot on the abdomen would be a big help, well that part was gone months ago and still couldn't stop the PPI. When it's too bad the surgeon say it's better to convert the sleeve into a bypass. For me it's not an option since I already have so many deficiencies just with a sleeve.

I've been sleeping on an incline for ten years and was watching my diet but for some patients post-op it's just not enough, they just need medication.
Also many of my older relatives take a PPI too because the side effect of one of their medication requires it.

I wish I could have stopped the PPI long before because the last studies do show so many scary side effect, it's really bad, and my vitamin deficiency and tendonitis could actually be coming from that too..I'm so glad I could finally stop it!

I feel like lately my heartburn has returned a bit. I may need to see what foods may be triggering it.
