Default Wanting a sleeve, now scared!!

Hi everyone, I am new here and need some advice. I want the sleeve and have done my share of research, but have some concerns now . I have a friend who had her sleeve I. December and I was there through the whole ordeal, I thought cool.. I can watch someone first hand post op. She has been sick the whole time now, she may feel good two or three days but mostly she feel sick, she throws up a lot can't keep anything down, and dehydrated. Her doctor said she had hiatal hernia on the day to surgery, that is what he told me immediately after surgery plus some scar tissue of which he said he repaired. Now, she had to have a GI and now saying she had a umbilical hernia!!!
That is not what he told me...so she complains about burning in her chest, not keeping anything down At all she is throwing everything up!

I am concerned about her and she had one of the best doctors here.mue is the Chief surgeon Dr. Krause from Beaumont hospital which is supposed to be the best here in Michigan. Now I am having second thoughts. She regrets it everyday. Can someone tell me if she should be sick this long...everyday!

There is always potential for complications. www.obesitycoverage.com has some great info on this. I had no complications. I have never thrown up. I've burned up foamy stuff once or twice from overeating. Most people do well. A small percentage of people have complications. Hernias can cause issues if not repaired properly. Ultimately you are the only one who can make the decision to be sleeved or not. No surgery is without risks especially to obese people. Good luck.

Thank you for that. I want to so badly but I do have some concerns now watching her. I realize it's a risk I guess I just don't hear too many stories about them. I will visit that site. Is it normal to throw up like that. She say she throw up until all of it is out of her stomach . Just curious.

There are risks with any surgery and I know that going in. My surgery is next Friday. My worry was about vomiting too, and like Christie said, if you eat a little too much or drink quickly instead of sip, there's the potential to vomit. I would hope your friend's doctor could help with the vomiting, giving an anti nausea med and also seeing why she keeps throwing up.

First off welcome. Secondly you can't let someones experience influence you decision, everyones body is different. You said yourself she had to have other things done during her surgery which you may not have to.She may be drinking or eating to quickly causing some of her problems.I guess my point is your experience will probably completely different from hers. I can see how it worries you though. Good luck with any choice yiou make for yourself.

NOTE to the original starter of this thread: there is no need to post identical threads in multiple forums.

Serious complications happen in less than 1% of those who have been sleeved. To put that into perspective, out of 100 people who are sleeved, only one patient in the group will experience serious complications. It was a chance I was willing to take.

Being fat sucks. Obesity will kill you faster than getting bariatric surgery. A laundry list of diseases are caused by obesity: diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, etc.

Also, a powerful social stigma comes with being obese. You are less likely to be hired than normal-weight counterparts. Now that I am at a normal body weight, people are friendlier and more willing to help me at stores and in the public.

Thus, you can continue to be scared and focus on the negatives, or you can do something to increase your life span and quality of life. For me, staying obese was not an acceptable option. Good luck with whatever you decide.
