Default Hello. Potential Sleeve patient. Insurance questions

Hi and thank for taking the time to read this

    I started my journey
    1. Met with doctors
    2. Started weight loss
    3. Attended mandatory nutrition class
    4. Screeching stop! Homework was to call insurance and see if bariatric is covered and it's not.

    Any suggestions?
Can I purchase more insurance on top of my company work insurance?
    Anyone pay cash?

Any help would be appreciated. I feel super frustrated and hopeless

A lot of people whose insurance does not cover WLS go to Mexico as it is much cheaper. You can get lots of info from people on here who have done that. Your doctor's office should have checked your insurance at the first visit. Shame on them. My surgeon's office did check to see if my insurance covered it, which they did, and then laid out the requirements set forth by my insurance. I am sorry you went through that.

Hi Lisa, my husbands company provides insurance and it wasn't covered. I went to Mexico 1-24-17 and had Dr Almanza. It was a great experience and had very good care. I would go again in a heartbeat and plan to return when I loose all my weight and have some plastic surgery. The hospital I was at had some great plastic surgeons also. They also get all their medical supplies from Baxter in the USA along with ice, water and much more. I went through weightloss Agents. They kept in constant contact and made sure I understood everything. They still Check on me and have assigned a contact person and gave me his number so I can call if I have any questions or problems come up. I payed 3,600$ cash and 200.00 deposit. That covered everything except airfare and it was 38.00$ a night for my husband to stay. It was originally 70.00. We had a beautiful room with nursing care 24/7 and A medical doctor examined us daily. It was going to be 20,000$ not including Anesthesia and medications at my local hospital. Please feel free to ask me any questions and if you would like to talk just p.m me and I'll give you my cell. Good Luck

Hi, ask your employer to add bariatric coverage to their policy. I was fortunate enough that my company added it per my request. Still have $5k annual out of pocket to pay but because I did surgery in February now have entire year to perform any other medical needs at zero cost.

As an aside, over the long run you should save money on all the food you won't be eating once you have the surgery. I am already noticing a big difference in the money I'm not spending

    Best of luck to you!

My insurance had a strict "no bariatric" policy. I'm a teacher. I was blessed to be able to afford it 5 minutes from home, paid a $14,000 flat fee that included everything from pre testing, surgery, and post surgery follow up. I have been attending their monthly support group for three years now! If you do self pay, I would recommend buying insurance for complications, as your insurance won't cover that either.

Many go to Mexico as it is so much less expensive, but that would scare me to death. But people here are thrilled with their experience there, so do whatever works for you! Best of luck in your decision.

Wow thank you all for the responses
Def gave me hope and options to think about.
So I'm assuming there isn't a supplemental insurance that can be purchased in addition to my primpary insurance that doesn't offer WL surgeries right?

I had no option to purchase any sort of supplemental coverage for bariatric surgery. The policy covers what it does and that's it. I'm Blue Cross/Blue Shield, but my employer must have a choice in what it wants to pay for.

You can get loans for medical expenses I heard, but I have not checked them out.
