So this past weekend I joined my two eldest and their families on a weekend trip to Rosarito/Ensenada, Mexico to stay at my son-in-law's parents beach house and buy pottery.
One of my granddaughters was a little sick, and I thought we should cancel, but what do I know right.
On Friday night, we ate at this fantastic Crab place in San Diego, CA. I had 4 raw oysters, and about 5 steamed shrimp oh and one boiled potato. Everyone else feasted on Cajun style crab legs, shrimp and sausage. I was really happy to be with my kids and grandkids.
We went grocery shopping before crossing the border. I was told there was a full functioning kitchen. Kids big and young, started filling the cart with junk food. Really???! I said, and I just rolled my eyes.
I made an amazing breakfast and then we headed out to sight see and go shopping. For lunch we ate at a restaurant and my son and I were supposed to share a lobsters and steak plate, but at the end he told me to just order something. I ordered a small steak. For dinner we ate at a famous taco place my son inla swears by, it was awesome! I ate one taco and was happily satisfied. The kids ate a ton. My son had fish tacos mixed with others.
Needless to say, the next morning (Sunday) we went to brunch at the resorts clubhouse. Great spread and kids, big and young, had their fill. After taking kids swimming we headed back to SD. We stopped in Rosarito to shop for pottery and stopped at another restaurant. My son somewhere between ordering and food coming had to go to the restroom. He was gone a long time. He came back just to say he'd wait for us in the car. We headed for the border. And what a nightmare!!! Four hours to cross! And in the meantime my son was in agony. We got him anti diarrhea medication. I think he might have drank water from the little one's water bottle and a combination of his food choices. No one else got sick.
In the car we got to talk about his eating behaviors, his comments not mine. He swore off food... been there.
I mentioned that once we got back home we should do Juice Cleanse. And he said yes. On Tuesday when he was feeling better he reminded me about the juice cleanse and I got him all set for three days. Yesterday he wanted off the juice cleanse, but I spent a pretty penny so I somehow maneuvered to get "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" to play on Netflix and we watched as a family. I have seen it a tons of times but each touching scene gets to me every time.
My son recommitted to finishing the three day cleanse and his wife, who is a sweetheart but doesn't make the best food choices herself was touched also.
I realize that juicing isn't sustainable, it wasn't for me, but it did put me on a pathway of research and eating better about 7-10 years ago.
My son is young, 27 years old, 6'2" and weighs maybe 300+lbs. He has struggled with weight since my divorce. When I shared with him about my decision to undergo WLS he was supportive and said if it works for me maybe he would consider it.
I just wanted to remind him that we can all adopt better and healthier lifestyle changes.
The fellow who is featured in the doc, Phil Staple, changed his life and for three years he kept off over 200lbs. However, juicing and healthy eating isn't sustainable if other issues haven't been addressed. He fell into a depression after a failed marriage. While success in some ateas where bringing happiness other areas he was tormented and went back to eating his feelings. And regained most of the weight back.
Stress Management Skills is essential to cope with the ups and dows of life.
My son is young, maybe if I can instill that in him he will beat obesity, if not I hope he considers the alternative before it's too late and wastes 40+ years of his life yo-yoing like I did.
