    Default History repeating itself

A little over two years ago when I had my surgery I got sick with complications. 2 months post op I ended up in ICU with sepsis. Now here we go with my dad. He had his surgery several months ago, and has been sick for a couple of months. After several hospital stays without getting better, he's now been admitted to the ICU tonight with sepsis as well.

This surgery has been a fucking nightmare for my family. My daughter, dad, and I have all suffered tremendously. My mother is the only one that has skated by easy breezy. Thank God there are no more overweight people in our family so no one else will be getting it.

Wow! There has to be some genetic answer! Unless you used the same surgeon then I would be looking at him through a microscope!!!

I'm truly sorry you are going through this!

Keeping your dad and family in my thoughts and prayers!

Trust that all will be fine.

Even though the process has caused some pain...you are smiling in your profile picture. So it seems you have found strength to get through the trial. I just encourage you to be an encouragement for your dad. Through you he can see the possible. I truly believe sometime we go through things to help others. You can truly empathize with your dad..and say I understand....only you can do that because of your experience...you....blessings

Katrina, I'm so sorry to read about your father! you did write a few months ago that you didn't agree with his decision to get bariatric surgery as well. After some many issues for yourself and your daughter it was his informed decision to do it anyway. Unfortunately you were right about the outcome.
Unless you all used the same doctor or facility, Shirl might be right thinking that there's something in your family's genes that doesn't go well with that type of surgery. I only hope your dad will feel better very soon and receive the best care possible. Sending you my best wishes for his recovery. Take care.

I agree there has to be a genetic componet. That's exactly why I didn't want my dad to have the surgery. My daughter and I take after him, and once we were both sick, I knew it wouldn't be a good idea for him. He would have zero part in listening to me. My dad did not have the same surgeon that my daughter and I had, so no link there.

He's got massive kidney stones. They are too big to pass. He has to have surgery, but he is too sick to have it. They will place a Stent tomorrow while they are pumping him full of antibiotics hoping to rid him of them sepsis. It is their hope to be able to do surgery within three or four days.

He just a few weeks ago had a procedure to have lots of unpassable stones broken up and had a Stent placed them as well. That obviously hasn't helped. He was in a different hospital a week ago pumped full of antibiotics for two days before being sent home on pill form of them. He still ended up septic.

Having a diet high in protein puts you at an increased risk for stones, and it looks like he has hit the unfortunate jackpot of it. I pray they are able to get him well enough to have the surgery soon. Hell, I just hope they are able to get him well. Full stop.

My family has a horrible track record of dying on other family member's birthdays. My 40 birthday is two days from now. I wouldn't even mention such a morbid thoughtit if it weren't a true and valid fear.

So very sorry for the pain you and your family have experienced. It stinks that the very thing that has helped so many others, has been the source of pain for you and your loved ones . Hopeful that your father has the best of surgeons and medical care so he can recover to enjoy his life.

    Thanks for the update!

After my gallbladder incident/surgery my aunt (bio chemist back home) insisted that it was caused by all the spinach juicing I had been doing at that time. I found tons of evidence to support her hypothesis. So when I mentioned that I am eating a "high protein diet" she suggested I take enzymes to help break down protein for absorption. I had been already on enzymes per my nutritionist suggestion, but for other reasons mostly to help me get regular because at that time I was constantly constipated.

Hopefully the stent will get him on the right track.

    Sending you immense love!

I was just getting an update from my mom when doctors walked in, so she had to quickly hang up. All I got to hear was that his blood pressure has come back up a bit. That's a huge praise as I know that is exactly how it all went down when I had sepsis...the blood pressure bottoming out. I'll update when I find out more specific information. My dad worries the shit out of me. I love that stubborn, grumpy ass!

Just talked to Mom again. They will be going in to place the stent at 10:30. This is just to help open his urethra to let out urine and infection. He is way too sick for them to go in yet for the stone retrieval. They are hoping to get him well enough to do that by next week. He's in really bad shape.

My mom was crying and said Dad was upset because tomorrow is my 40th birthday, and he's scared. My sister died on my dad's 60th birthday, and he's terrified with him being so sick that a horrible fate may strike us again. I had already thought about that as I had mentioned it in a post above, but I sure wish my daddy wasn't thinking about such things.

So sorry to hear about your dad. I totally understand your fear going into your birthday. My friends/family seem to go for holidays.....my grandma died on New Years Eve. My best friend and Grandpa double dipped on Easter (not the same year), my dog on Labor Day, My brother on the 4th of July....and his birthday was Halloween. It's only a matter of time before thanksgiving and Christmas are ruined, too.

Sending prayers your way and Wishing you the best...you deserve it.

Katrina, my first thought was that the hospital might be the problem. In my area, there was one hospital that had a high rate of sepsis and some kind of virus. It made all the news and it turned out that a operating utensil sterilizing machine being used was faulty. I think there were other findings, but what you said just brought it all back. I hope your dad recovers quickly, what a crappy thing to go through.

I feel ya, Kindle. My sister's daughter (I refer to her as my daughter as I became her second mom after my sister died and she became an orphan) died Christmas night 2015, so that's ruined. My middle daughter got sick with her brain bleeding due to complications from VSG on her own 20th birthday. Holidays and birthdays scare the shit out of me.

So, I was called to the hospital today in a rush. They said it didn't look good as they were about to take him back for surgery to place the stent. I hauled ass there as fast as I could. I did not make it before they took him back. My daughter was on the phone with him "Papa, you have to fight for me. I fought to come back to you when I got sick. Now you have to fight to come back to me." Holy shit, it's hard to drive 90 down the freeway when you have tears pouring down your face. Despite the fact that they anticipated him going into septic shock during the procedure, he did really well. I did not go back to see him because I have a cold, but Mom and Meg said he was feeling much relief afterwards. He said there was so much pressure released. The doctor said he expects him to be very sick for at least the next three days with spiking fevers, dropping BP, and elevated heart rate while the infection works its way out and the antibiotics begin to work. He said he hopes to do the retrieval surgery in 10 days to 2 weeks but not until he is 100% clear of the sepsis. Hopefully he's on his way to clearing it.

Update on my dad: He's not doing well at all. He's still in ICU. While they thought yesterday morning he was doing better, that was not to be the case. He ended up with major oxygen drops. He went down into the 50's whill on C-Pap and they were unable to get him back up out of the 60's for quite a while. He now has pneumonia in both lungs.

I had not been to the hospital to see him in several days because I have a very slight cold. I didn't want to risk passing it along to him. But with yesterday's scare, I hauled ass over there. He doesn't even look like my dad. I barely recognize the old man lying in that hospital bed. He looks so old, frail, and just plain awful. It hurts so much to see that and know it's my dad. I'm really worried. They said he would get better, but he's just getting worse.
