    Default Treadmill Accuracy

Hi folks I have a question on the calorie burning counters on treadmills at gyms. The reason I am asking is today for the first time I actually put in my weight before starting my workout, I usually burn around 300 calories but today doing the same routine I burned 600 based off my weight. The reason I am concerned about this is I am currently only eating between 600-800 calories a day and if I am burning it all off on the treadmill I think I need to make a small adjustment to either my calorie intake or my carb intake to balance this out a bit. I am eating roughly 85 grams of protein my nutritionist wanted it closer to 95 but I feel full so I stop eating. I plan on calling the nutritionist on Monday but was wondering if anyone knew how accurate these calorie counters on treadmills actually are.

I don't put a lot of credibility in the machines calorie tracking. On average I use 100 calories for an hour walking. Calories burned varies by person and your sex, weight and age are all variables that increase or decrease your calories burned. Your speed and the incline also impact how many calories you burn. Eating more to cover for what calories you burn is called eating back your calories. While still losing weight I increased my calories for some of what I burned, but not all of them, since my goal was to burn more calories than I ate.

Exactly what Mary said. You need to have a deficit to lose weight but you also don't want your body going into starvation mode. Definitely talk to your surgeon and nutritionist to give you a good plan of action.

Unless you are strapped to a cardiogram and oxygen-use monitor then you really do not know how much calories your particular body is burning.

If you want to lose fat you really need to concentrate on anaerobics several times a week, which entails keeping your heart in a fast/rest rhythm. If you walk/job/run at same speed/time/incline your body will adjust and in the beginning you will lose some weight. But the way it was explained to me was that our bodies adjust to repetitiveness, and when it knows it will take an x amount of calories and x amount of calories out, it starts adjusting to keep the status quo. It is part of our human evolution and we evolved to store for hard times.

So best thing with food and exercise is to keep body guessing.

If you starve your body enough it will lose weight, but it will consume fat and muscle (remember that awful movie Silence of the Lambs... Sorry I had to go there!) if you lose muscle you need less calories because your body starts shutting the fat burning process. You need anaerobics to build muscle thats acts like your internal furnace.

The challenge for me is consistancy and putting my knowledge to daily practice.

Right now, your only job is to eat as much protein from the calories you are able to consume a day.

According to authority nutrition blog "The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, or 0.36 grams per pound.

    This amounts to:
    - 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man.
    - 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman."

This is a deficiency if you are active as you are, and for anyone who does more than just breath which most of us!

If you only consume 800 calories because thats all you can eat right now that's okay! Just make it sure you are nourishing your body with protein dense foods first and aim for 85g+ of protein daily (thats only 340 calories from protein only). Since you are exercising then eating whole, unrefined carbs like sweet potatoes, legumes and non-gluten grains like oats, quinoa and brown rice is fine. BUT remember these foods go down easier (at least for me they did) and should only be eaten after you are able to eat your required Protein (25-35g per meal) and after low starch low carb vegetables, and should be eaten in moderation and only if you're exercising like you say you are.

    Best wishes!

    Hi Donald,
I noticed often a really big discrepancy between what a treadmill tells you and what a pedometer tells you. I have an health app on my phone that will tell me how much I burn in calories. For ex when walking 5K I'm around 400 calories. On a treadmill it's usually 800 or more. Both have the same infos: weight, age, gender.
At the end of the day, it's not really important. Your scale will tell you what you need to know.
I always tried to eat 60gr protein per day since surgery, the first three months it was really hard, but it got easier later. I felt also much better when I could eat more protein/good nutriments and drink more water.
I don't track my food all the time because I know what I'm eating. But I never eat in relation to my activity. I'm mostly try to stay around 1200 calories (my BMR is at 1600 without counting exercise). Feeling full is of course the signal to stop eating, you are doing the right thing. Keep it simple, it will work just fine. Take care.
