Default why only 60 percent weight loss???

    Hello everyone. I'm new!

I'm planning on getting a gastric sleeve in a couple of months. I was just concerned because I keep reading that you lose 60% after surgery. If that was true of me I'd still be approx 45 pounds over...do they mean 60% is relatively easier than when the real work begins?!

No. They mean that some people did not lose very much after WLS. The reasons can vary but usually involve not following the rules and not changing the eating behaviors that got them fat in the first place. These people get averaged in with the folks that DO follow the rules and DO make the necessary lifestyle changes. For example, I lost over 100% of my excess weight and have kept it off for 3 years. That means someone else only lost 20% of their excess weight. But that person has nothing to do with my outcome, just like they have nothing to do with yours. WLS stats mean nothing when it comes to your success or failure.

Exactly what Kindle said. Some people eat around their sleeve. They graze all day. They eat junk food and sweets thinking it is ok because they are eating less of them. They don't change the bad habits. This is most likely why insurance requires a psych evaluation as part of the approval process. To ensure they don't waste money on your surgery only for you to waste the tool you were given. This tool requires embracing lifestyle changes as well. There are plenty of people on here who lose all their excess weight. I have no doubt I will be one of them as 4 months out I am only 21 lbs from my goal weight. I have taken this process seriously along with the lifestyle changes. Exercise and proper nutrition are a must.

Ditto what everyone above said. I had sleeve surgery and lost 100% of the weight I needed to lose. Your success depends totally on you following the rules and not giving up if it gets a little tough. Once you get to your ideal weight as long as you continue to follow good eating guidelines and exercise the sleeve actually helps you maintain your weight loss.

Another thing to keep in mind is that your individual weight norms may vary depending on your genetics, height, ethnicity, bone and muscle mass. If you are of White European descent and follow under same genetic characteristics of the American Standard metrics that most medical professionals are forced to use to tell you what your weight should be, then by all means follow it, but I'm yet to find out who/whom the medical profession used to come up with those metrics that we're measured against, or rather who are we suppose to strive to be. So even if you subscribe as White I'd be wary, and only set your weight goals after a thorough body composition exam with a DeXA scan or something similar that can give a more accurate measure of you bone, muscle and fat ratio.

But if you want to subject yourself to sometimes unrealistic weight goals then by all means.

Either way, make sure you set S.M.A.R.T. Goals for yourself and that you commit to a lifestyle change/plan/foundation that will sustain your weight loss for life.

    Best wishes.

You only get out of it what you put into it. the stomach surgery its self is only a tool that is helpful to a point and if you don't work at ti then you wont lose as much as you want to. But also you have to remember that after extreme weight loss there can be lose skin which can be around 20lbs (like on my body) and that is going to keep you from getting to the lowest point as well. I have been working my sleeve for five years now and from the sleeve i lost 100 lbs but over all I have lost 300lbs. so my skin is a huge factor in my not being where the Dr says i should be. But also I have found that I cant get down to 145 like the Dr wants because my body just isnt built for that weight. I have gotten as low as 160 and I was getting bruised from my own bones because I was too skinny. My knees would knock together when i walked or just when i slept and i would end up bruised badly from it and my elbows would hit my hips if i sat down the wrong way and left bruises. There is such a thing as too skinny and many times the dr.s charts for your ideal weight based on height are WAY off. I am comfortable with my weight being in the 170's which is including the excess skin i havent had removed yet. I may never have it removed I'm not sure yet but once the massive excess weight was gone i found i had to become comfortable with myself and realize that I didnt need to be thirty pounds smaller to be happy. So just remember that the more you work at ti the more you will lose but you may not be able to get to a Dr.s goal weight because many times they are unrealistic. In the end the weight numbers arent what matter what matters is you being happy and healthy with where ever you get to and if you re considering surgery to lose weight then you are obviously not happy where you are and i would guess not healthy either. The scale wont matter once the weight comes off and stays off due to your work and lifestyle changes.
I wish you all the best with this journey, for it it was one of the toughest thing I have ever done and the most worth it!

I asked my surgeon that very question, "Why don't people lose 100% of their excess weight?" He said basically what ACE said: that sometimes the "standards" are way off for some people. That if you were 350 pounds, you might be very comfortable and happy weighing 180 even though the charts say you should be 140. My own goal is 120, but when I got married 40 years ago I weighed 105 and didn't feel thin then! But now, I know when I reach 120, I will feel great, healthy and happy.

Not all people are built the same.
Like Shirl said, a scan (I got something similar to the Dexa at my local hospital) will tell about your body composition.
Truth is that for morbidly obese patients, it could be impossible for them to get down to a "normal weight" for many reasons, one of them being that when you reach a weight really high your fat cell actually multiply. So even with weight loss, your fat cell will reduce in size but can't disappear. And like Ace said there's also the extra skin.
In my case I'm not expecting to reach a weight I had before my first pregnancy, because it wouldn't be realistic. At this stage I won't be losing more than 30 or 40 pounds max, and I'm only 10 pounds from my surgeon's prediction.
So those 60% are just an average number, if some people can lose 80 pounds and be at their goal weight or even under, those who have 150 pounds to lose could have more issues to reach that number. And indeed, like Kindle said there's people who don't follow the rules and stop losing weight after three months when they should be losing. Not following the rules could be the main reason here.

What's the most important at the end of the day is not to reach a number or a percentage, but get to a weight that's going to improve your health and your life.
I know that I tried my best for years, was not successful. My longest diet was one full year, it drove me crazy. I was always hungry and at the end I regained 60% of what I lost.
Right now with the sleeve I'm not hungry. I eat smaller quantities.
Even if my metabolism was not going to allow me to lose more, I would be frustrated but would consider my surgery a success.
I'm healthier, can move more and my quality of life is so much better! For me it's more important than statistics.

    Good luck and take care!

The stats are averages, you can take me, who lost 125lbs, bringing me to a weight of 130lbs, and someone else who was 255lbs and only lost 50lbs. The reasons vary. We're all different.
I would look at it this way, if you lost the 60% you would be 45lbs over weight, but if you don't do the surgery, then what?
The sleeve changed my life. I'm over 2 years out and have maintained for (I think) a year.
It's not easy. The hardest in the beginning was not being able to chug water. Sip. Sip. Sip.
But I can now, so it's all good.
Whatever you do, keep reading stories on here. Be prepared and know what your doing is a permanent lifestyle change.
    sleeved 12/30/14 @255lbs Goal 140lbs
    3/3/15- 208lbs 6/14/15- 163lbs
    lost 92lbs in 1st 6mo
    9/10/15- 139 1/5/2016 - 128lbs
    lost 128lbs in 1 year
    4/4/16 - 123lbs 7/4/16 - 129lbs 12/3/16- 130
    still 128lb loss@2 year mark-11lbs below goal
gained 13lbs by 3 year mark weighing 142lbs
Gained up to 158 by 3 years 3 months!
    3.5 years back to 142
    hoping to stay between 140lbs-145lbs
4 years hanging in between 145 and 150
5 year mark! ugh! Up to 160! Time to get back track!

I went from 172 to 98 pounds (admittedly lost too much) within 6 months. Now nearly 5 years out and still waver between 112 and 118

You get out of it what you put into it. If you put in the minimum work you will get minimal results. But if you are diligent and work hard you will do great.
