My doctor only has me scheduled for a pre-op diet for 5 days before surgery. I was thinking about doing it for a few more days than that. Maybe even two weeks of protein shakes for breakfast and dinner with a small lunch of chicken and veggies.

Weight lost is weight lost. Sounds like you are ready to go get on the horse.

I had a 2 week liquid preop and was required to lose 5% of my total weight (12 pounds). I was SO excited to get started plus a little concerned I couldn't lose 12 pounds in 14 days so I started my preop 3 days early. Ended up losing 22 pounds instead! But like others said, it's gotta come off sometime. Never too soon to start.
My sister did extra pre op diet. I got my approval and had a 9 day pre op diet. 6 days with 2 shakes and my small protein/veggie meal and then 3 days of liquids only. You will see that there are a ton of different pre op diets on here. It would not hurt you to do extra. I was not allowed to do any extra because I could not fall below 40 BMI until after insurance approval. As soon as I got approval I was scheduled for surgery 9 days later.
Because my BMI was really high (around 53) I was told that my pre-op diet could be more than 4 weeks. My doc wanted me to lose ten pounds but I'm a slow loser. So I decided to lose on my own, just watching my carb intake and increasing my protein. I lost 11 pounds in about six weeks, then my doc told me two weeks pre-op diet was going to be enough. During those two weeks I lost 7 pounds. My doc pre-op diet was two shakes a day and a dinner of lean protein and non starchy veggies. I think it's always positive to start when you feel ready. Eating healthy is always a win!

I was scheduled for a 10 day pre-op diet and decided to start a bit early. I did, by choice, my pre-op diet for 15 days. My pre-op diet was a protein shake (i used Isopure dutch chocolate... LOVE it!) for breakfast and for lunch, and a 3-4 ounce tilapia filet with lemon juice and salt/pepper for dinner. TONS of sugar-free fluids; whether it's from crystal light or sugar free popsicles, or even sugar free jell-o will TOTALLY help you not be hungry after the first 3 days or so. The hunger DOES go away.
I lost 17 lbs BEFORE surgery, and have since dropped another 27 lbs. Just be aware by starting early that your '3 week stall' may not happen at that point... I stalled week 1 post-op. It's TOTALLY normal and necessary to have stalls so don't sweat them when they happen. Just keep up your fluid intake and focus on your protein and it'll start falling off again. It seems that I lose 2-4 lbs a week at the moment, which puts me between 8-16 lbs a month. That's PLENTY good enough for me!
I started two and half months out. I lost 22 pounds pre-op during that time> I think it really helped me during the formal pre-op and post-op because my body was used to mostly liquids.
