Is there any particular reason you would even consider a Lap-Band when this procedure has fallen out of popularity for the past 5+ years? Many bariatric surgeons do not even perform it anymore due to insufficient weight loss in banded patients.

Frankly, the Lap-Band is a temporary band-aid to a permanent, time-dependent, lifelong problem of obesity. If you really want a chance at permanence with weight loss and maintenance, forget about the Lap-Band and look into the gastric sleeve.

You will still be hungry with the Lap-Band because that surgery does not address your hunger hormones. It is easy to eat around the band. And once that band comes off due to slippage, erosion or the multitude of other complications, the person usually regains all their weight quickly and fiercely.

I was sleeved nearly two years ago. I enjoy the permanence of 80 percent of my stomach being gone forever. Good riddance.

The sleeve is the only one I considered. There seems to be quite a bit of maintenance with the band,.. have to get adjustments etc. And there is the risk of the band slipping. There was a woman in my required classes leading to my surgery that first had the band. It slipped and made her quite ill. She was hospitalized for several days and had to have it removed entirely. I dunno,.. just seems to be too much risk and maintenance for me.

With the sleeve, I get the surgery, have a few post op check ins and I'm good to go as long as I independently 'follow directions', with less risk afterward. Plus it is permanent.

Ultimately your decision but have you researched both procedures? The band has a lot of follow up visits and since it is a foreign object has more complications. Definitely worth researching the differences. Also, lots of revision from band to sleeve on here.

Now, if you had said between the sleeve and the bypass, that might have been more of a discussion. But the lap band doesn't seem like a good alternative as was stated by other forum responders. I don't think it's very successful long-term. If you're looking for something NOT permanent, then just stick to dieting, it's safer and you'll end up in the same place....still overweight.
