Default Post op 15 months and I don't have thirst.

Ever since I had the surgery I never get thirsty. I can go all day, then think about it, when I do then I'll drink something but I can't swallow very much. I put the glass down and I won't drink anything again till the next day or I push myself. I do have two cups of coffee in the morning and that's easy. But sometimes it'll be the end of the night when I realized I haven't had anything else to drink all day. This isn't occurred just once but many times. I'm starting to feel like I'm compromising my body physically because I know this isn't healthy. At the same time I'm not sure how to make myself drink. When I mentioned it to the doctor Mexico and nutritionist suggested I drink electrolytes and water that's Infuse which I do. That helps a lot but I just don't get thirsty. And I don't know what to do about that part.

Any body else have this issue?

This was done from my phone so please excuse the typos

WomYn!!! That alone should be a motivator to help you drink water regularly. Set a reminder on your smart phone, your laptop, have friends call you to remind you to drink your water. I'd glue a water bottle to my hand if I had to!

I got a beautiful water infuser I use all the time, I add ginger, lime, cucumbers or mint and apples and strawberries - the combos are endless. I also bought into the alkalized water craze... I don't know if the claimed benefits are real, but I sure drink lots of it lol!

Remember to try to get half of your current weight in ounces. sooo if you weigh 200lbs try to reach 100oz or at least strive to do the bariatric minimun req of 64oz daily.

I don't think I"m ever thirsty either. I prefer room temp water. I start my day with a gallon of water on the counter. I fill my water bottle. I kind of set a schedule. I want the first one done by 9-10 am, next one done by lunch, next one done before 3, next one done by dinner. I also fit a protein shake and coffee in there. Drinking is just too important to mess around with. Download a water app that beeps and reminds you to drink.

I'm never thirsty either, but I figured it was because I'm sipping constantly. My biggest issue is getting started in the a.m. I have coffee, then forget about drinking until later, I like Luna354's suggestion, I will try that.

Here's some info that may provide a little insight about post-WLS hydration and how to deal responsibly with it.

Y'know what GHRELIN is? It's the hunger hormone produced by the stretchy portion (the fundus) of our stomachs that is removed during VSG surgery. And when that fundus is removed during surgery, our body doesn't receive ghrelin anymore. That's why so many of us see a long-term reduction in our appetites post-op. For some lucky ducks that appetite reduction goes on for longer than for others.

But here's the part you may not know: Ghrelin is not just the hunger hormone -- it's also the THIRST HORMONE. And when our funduses are removed, post-op we have a greatly reduced urge to hydrate ourselves. The dehydration signals we used to get are very much dumbed down. It's like we've gone DEAF to our own dehydration.

And that is why post-op we must not rely on "feeling thirsty" to keep ourselves hydrated.

So what do we do now? We use whatever reminders that work for us to make us drink. Some people every morning put out the water bottles they have to finish by bedtime. Others set alarms that ring throughout the day. Others (like me) click on their tracking apps the number of cups they've drunk every day. Others keep bottles distributed throughout their work place, their vehicles, and homes (by the bed, in the bathroom, in the living room or den, in the kitchen) so they'll always have a bottle of water nearby to remind them to drink.

Water is like your food. It's like your exercise. Like Nike says, "Just do it!"

P.S. Nothing wears us out like being dehydrated. So a HUGE benefit of being fully hydrated every day is that your energy will soar. Just soar!

Because I was nauseous for months, I had issues to drink enough for months too. I couldn't stand room temperature for water. It was easier to drink anything with substance : thea, herbal tea but mainly iced cold water was the only way I could drink "pure" water. Coffee being a diuretic you actually need to drink water after coffee...try to drink more hot drinks if you like it, or broth. Anything you like, but measure what you drink, it's really important.
Also for UTI cranberry juice does help a lot, but the main reason you have those is indeed because you don't drink enough in the first place.
We live in a very hot climate and one of my kid had the same issue twice. So I made sure to send her to school with a larger bottle and put some lime inside so she would drink more because there's "a taste".

I have water with me at all times. It helps me "remember" to drink. I make it a priority. And I like the reminders with your phone or a water app. You need to do what you have to do until it just becomes a habit to drink.

Thanks youguys. I will share that a couple of days AGO Ia put an alarm on my phone as reminders and each time I wasn't near a location to get to water nor DID DI REMEMBER to bring water. If I have to drink just plan water I also gag...It's hard to swallow and I'm lucky if I can get a few ounces down. If I add lemon then I am golden. Ann the information you shared was very helpful. I talk to the nutritionist about all of this a few months ago and he also said that plan water can bother some sleevers due to the PH level and thus why most of us do better with some kind of fruit or powder to change the PH level so we can drink more easily.

I am 55, responsible, run my own successful business and for the life of me I can't remember to drink water or take it with me. ugh!! I just don't like that lost feeling here. I am on hold with Kaiser as I now have a full blown UTI "again"! I'm miserable and so far I got 2 ounces of water in. IT's early and I am also sipping on my coffee. My DH brought me the water considering I YET to forget again. It's the not remember that is bothering me. Sounds ridiculous I know...I am going to really try. I think I might be buy a glass defuser too. Gotta do this!

Good on ya, tinachristina. You can do this. As you said, you're great on other fronts -- now you just have to get great on this front.

I agree with the person who said it helps with water intake to flavor it. For the first few months post-op I used Mio drops a lot. Theyre convenient -- small container goes in a pocket or a purse without taking up a lot of room.

I started using PURE Water Enhanser drops sometime ago, and I use it regularly and especially when I want a soda or a flavored drink.

Would using a water infuser help???

I was just shopping around for one today, since I left my old one somewhere. I hope someone found it and using it.
