Default Do I have to nothing but chicken and broccoli the rest of my life?

Hi all you pro sleevers! I've been going over my post op food plan, and it says to eat a "low carb lifestyle" for the rest of my life. I have good willpower when I have to, but the thought of low carb forever seems daunting to me. I don't know if I can do that forever without having some grains and at least fruit.

My surgery isn't until April, but I want to be prepared for my life after the sleeve. Am I taking this low carb thing too literally? With the exception of overt sugar, can I resume a somewhat normal diet after 6 months to a year? Just wanted your thoughts on this. Thanks for any info or comments, my friends.

From what everyone has been saying (a lot today in fact on another thread), just make good choices. I know my nutritionist has said to me that THIS IS YOUR LIFE, in life there will be special occasions and celebrations and yes, you can take that bite of cake or a favorite dish you like. But do it in moderation and not very often. I too, have moments where I think WTH am I getting myself into? But then I realize it's a lifestyle change (which I have already begun back in December) and I will follow my plan but NOT treat it like a diet. If I want to eat something that I haven't eaten in a while, I will have a small portion, but I'll make sure it's low carb and no sugar, etc.... Right now, this pre op diet (which has worked) is SO DAMN strict, I can't eat too much variety. I would love to eat a meatball!

My nut recommended low carb. I am 16 weeks and I overall follow low carb. I have had a bite of this or that to celebrate but overall I eat low carb. I know eventually I will add some carbs back in but for now this is working for me. I know a lot of people will eat carbs. And l agree with you, avoid the things like sweets and white processed flours. I think healthy grains and fruits in moderation will be fine.

Here is what I ate today...keep in mind that I am nearly two years out. I eat a decent amount of carbs because I use them for fuel. I run approximately 30 miles per week, so my body tolerates carbs well.

    Breakfast: three cups of coffee

Lunch: meatloaf and mashed potatoes with gravy

    Snack: protein-fortified chips

Dinner: meatloaf and a side of southwest salad

Bedtime snack: two potato wedges, a pickle spear, and a turkey Italian sausage sandwich made with 45-calorie-per-slice multigrain bread

Im five and a half years out and I have never given up carbs I never gave up sugar i never gave up anything other than the chemicals in the processed foods I no longer eat because I have learned what those things do to my body. This journey is all abut YOU and only YOU. You will find what you can and cant eat when it applies to what makes you not lose or regain weight but its all trial and error once you get about a year out. Your body will tell you what it likes and dislikes over time but remember you wouldn't be in this place looking toward surgery for something so drastic if it wasn't going to take some major changes especially in the beginning. I totally don't believe that we all have to live on low carb high protein diets we learn to live a lifestyle with food that we never knew how to do before. I love my relationship with food now and love food more than ever but I am easily able to maintain my 300 lb weight loss (staying between 170-190 the last 3 years) and I eat what I like. I just have learned over all this time how much I can eat and what I choose not to eat but I eat bread and pasta, i eat sugar and fats I just personally find that processed foods with preservatives and unnatural chemicals in them trigger my food addiction and i look at those things for me like a crack addict sees crack. I know if i eat it i have a hard time stopping and so I avoid those things that trigger me. But I bake a lot and i even eat chocolate and cake at times but its so much easier now for me not to eat the whole cake I can now have about 4 bites and be satisfied with something that used to make me eat until the entire thing was gone. A big part of this journey will be you redefining your relationship with food and finding the reasons you got to where you are now and how to not go there again. Dont over think the diet after for the rest of your life it will not be nearly as bad as you can imagine. Infact it can be amazingly good! I wish you all the best and I hope this helps a little. I understand the fear that comes in this question of how to deal with food forever.

Thanks so much everyone for your replies. I'm understanding now that it's truly an individual food plan, you just find what works for you. And I can't know that until I've been sleeved, and past the healing stage. I'll have to find my own way through the food, but I know I'll have to stay away from sugar and any trigger foods. That's how I got to this point in the first place, and I don't ever want to go back.

I'm truly grateful for all the help this forum provides. You all are just amazing!

And here is the problem with all of our previous attempts at weight loss. We reach a goal then go back to old habits. Slipping into old habits will get you where you were before. Carefully plan out when you have to make choices.

Before this I thought quitting smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done. Getting past the withdrawals was hard but once there I just have to decide to never smoke again. Dieting, once you get past the withdrawals you just have to chose not to eat again? Nope, eating is required. Our taste buds are our taste buds but if you can reprogram them to not like sugar so much, why normalize? Carbs are yummy goodness that do so much damage. I fight everyday against the salty savory tastes. I lose sometimes but it how you follow it up that counts. Go to the gym, go for a walk, eat a better dinner, refocus somehow.

Eating low carb is the best option but not always the easiest. Do what you can, your success depends solely on yourself.

Patti, your last response is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Your journey is your and yours alone. What works for one may not work for another.

In my case, I am a carb junkie. I live for carbs. My protein shake that I have every morning for breakfast has 19 grams of carbs, from there yesterday alone I had a BLT for lunch (the whole thing on white Bunny bread), two bowls of potato soup and a serving of pot roast for dinner, two rice Krispy treats, a Reese's cup, and a bag of Queso Lay's chips for snack. I'm 5'4" and weigh 108 lbs. I eat like that everyday and haven't gained weight yet at more than two years post-op. I also haven't exercised a single day. Someone else could eat like that and gain ten pounds. Our bodies are all different. I hope for your sake that your body will accept carbs.

My thought on it, and it's just my theory, don't cut the carbs at all, not even in the beginning. I feel like if you let your body get used to not having carbs that it isn't going to react well once you inevitably let them slip back in. Like I said though, that's just my opinion. Best of luck to you.

Thanks ghostryder, I know you are right. I must change my way of thinking about food, because that's what got me in trouble in the first place. I so appreciate your wisdom.
