Default Are there any Type 1 diabetics in here who have had Gastric Sleeve surgery?

Hi, I am new to all this and still going thru the hoops to get approved for surgery. I am almost completely finished with the requirements but have some concerns. I am type 1 diabetic and have had diabetes for 27 years, I am 37. Most of the people that have had this surgery with diabetes are Type 2 and was wondering if anyone in here who has had it are Type 1. I am little scared since you can't eat a lot or your stomach can't hold a lot after surgery as to what you do when your sugar drops? I am on an insulin pump. My current weight is 205 and I barely meet the BMI (35.2) requirements but I do have comorbidity's that qualify me. I was also told that I could possibly only lose up to 27 lbs so just trying to out weigh my options if putting my body through this is worth it. And yes I have tried numerous things to loose weight and nothing helps!! I was told most of my issues are Metabolic! Any advice, suggestions, similar situations, and/or stories would be greatly appreciated.

These are definitely concerns to discuss with your surgeon and primary care physician as they are very serious health related questions. Good luck!

First I want to tell you that I am not a health professional. I am speaking from my experience with my first husband. He was type one diabetic. He was never overweight and abused sweets on a daily basis. Living with a diabetic for 27 years, and being a sleeved person myself I think you will be happy with your results. When you have a low blood sugar you will handle it without eating candy bars, orange juice, etc. You can keep some glucose handy for those occasions. You should be able to train yourself to get through insulin reactions without unhealthy foods/drinks that will cause weight gain in the long run. It's a different world on the sleeved side. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't carry a couple pieces of candy for emergencies. You just won't justify it because your stomach won't be craving it.

Welcome, I'm with Christy, I strongly encourage you do discuss these concerns with your surgeon and endocrinologist or Pcp that cares for your diabetes but I can speak of my experience with dealing with very serious health issues, CHF, thyroid disease and Addison's disease to name a few, I've already lost 30 pounds in 28 days and I lost 22lbs while I was severely hypothyroid. If you can do this and follow everything instructed, exercise you should loose more weight than that. However there are surgeons out there removing way less of the stomach therefore decreasing the results. I had my specialist clear me first before setting up this surgery. Good luck
