    Default The Power of Exercise!

Don't let anyone tell you exercise is not important in this journey. I have basically maintained my goal weight to the pound for 2 and a half years by eating right and exercising. Super Bowl Sunday I fell down the stairs, fractured my C2 vertebra and broke 2 ribs. They put me in a cervical collar with a strict do nothing rule for 30 days, not even walking for exercise. I am happy as it could have been so much worse, but crabby nevertheless.

FOUR POUNDS! I haven't eaten any differently and have gained 4 pounds in less than 2 weeks. I haven't been eating any junk at all, or grazing, or anything. Makes me crazy. Obviously I have to eat less than I am used to. But it's so much more fun to exercise than it is to eat less. Not to mention it's been beautiful here, 78 yesterday in Missouri in February, crazy! And next weekend we are going skiing in Colorado and I just get to sit and watch. My dad taught me to ski when I was 5 on a little hill in Wisconsin, and I've been skiing ever since. That's 55 years of skiing. Sad.

Pity party going on here. Trying to stop the pain meds starting today, maybe they are contributing to the gain. But broken ribs really hurt.

I did get a cute journal to write down everything I put in my mouth starting today. So far 2 eggs and 1 piece of bacon. Wish me luck!

Those pounds could be coming from the medications you take. Corticoids made me gain weight like crazy last May, but a few days after I stopped it was gone. Same again in November with asthma medication. I didn't gain weight per say but was on a stall for ever.
So just take what you need for the pain and don't worry, those pounds will go away as soon as you stop!
I hope you will be able to enjoy the sun and fresh air in Colorado! Take care

Some people can easily maintain their weight without exercise...I am not one of those fortunate individuals. Since I have longstanding hypothyroidism, my metabolic rate would move at a snail's pace without my 5-mile-a-day running regimen.

Like sraebear, I'd much rather exercise most days of the week to be able to have more freedom with my food choices than be relegated to tracking caloric intake for the rest of my life.

I know you must be frustrated, sraebaer.

Don't forget the water. At least the doc can't fuss at you for the extra steps you take going to the bathroom.

And while you're moving a lot less you gotta eat less -- otherwise, those pounds will keep appearing. In the same situation, as much as possible I'd turn back into a tender WLS patient. I'd focus a lot on protein, which would also help me heal.

What've you got left -- two more weeks? You can do this!

Again, you are so lucky you didn't hurt yourself any more than you did. Your guardian angels are working overtime.

I was so sorry to read about your awful accident. Praise God you will make a full recovery. When I read about your ski trip I felt so bad. I grew up skiing too but when I put weight on it made it more difficult. I'm so excited to loose all my weight and develop good exercise routine and get back on the slops. my favorite place to ski in Colorado is Snowmas in Aspen. Where in Colorado are you going? Colorado is so beautiful. Hang in there and thanks for sharing.

I've heard that about Vail and have heard good things about Cooper. My brother and sister n law live in Aspen so it makes skiing there easy and of course the skiing is Amazing but I think skiing anywhere in Colorado is amazing. I hope the trip goes well for you, I'm sure it won't be easy at times. Take care

Sorry to hear what you have been through. Glad to hear it wasn't worse. I totally agree with you exercising is definitely a big deal. I feel walking 20,000 to 25,000 steps a day has helped do this well
