    Default Water questions???

Just curious how much water is required to drink after the surgery and why is water so important? Also, how do you get it all in?

I am not a big water drinker at all or much liquids of any kind at that, other than maybe a diet soda once a day. I just don't know how I'm going to get all this water in on a daily basis. Does it have to be all water or do other things count?

Also, I currently take a water pill which I can't stay out of the bathroom now with.......I can't imagine what it will be like after adding even more water in.

In order to go home from the hospital I had to have 24 ounces of fluids. I had some broth, crystal lite and some water.
Once your home, my goal is 64 ounces. I do have crystal light. the first couple weeks, I had broth, hot water with lemon, and crystal lite. Now i'm just water/crystal light.

Is it possible after surgery you will no longer need a water pill?
I'm in the bathroom a lot not. I have about 100 ounces a day.

Gotta have your water buttercup, helps every part of your body! Sounds like you need a lot more water now as well. It will happen, maybe not overnight, but it will. Good luck to you.

I've been told by the nurse at my surgeon's office to drink 64 ounces of water a day. Since I have to take small sips I never get 64 ounces in one day. On a good day I might get to about 50, but most days I suspect not even close. Consequently I am always thirsty. I'm not dehydrated though. That is something we will need to be careful about post-op. Hopefully I will be able to take bigger sips as the days move on. Right now I'm still not even two months out from my surgery.

If you really commit to changing your lifestyle, you'll figure out how to drink 64 ounces of water a day.

Very few people chose WLS because they were already eating correctly and drinking enough water. You'll figure it out.

Spoiler alert: The way to do it is to just do it.

Do they expect you to drink 64 oz right after surgery or is this like months down the road??

You're expected to drink 48-64oz of liquids per day (according to my dr). That includes protein shakes, broths, water, diet teas, popcicles, etc. The liquids are very important so that you do not get dehydrated.

I was drinking 64 ounces by the 5th day. I only did this by making it my full time job....slept with a water bottle, drove with a water bottle, sipped in between appointments at work. Did not go to bed at night until my 64 oz was gone. Gradually worked my way up to 100oz within a few months.

Like Ann said, the only way yo do it is to just do it. Treat your water and protein goals like a life saving prescription medication. Not taking it isn't an option.

Sip. Sip. Sip. Decaf tea, Decaf Coffee, broth, popsicles, jell-o, anything liquid counts. Plain water is not the only liquid. It is amazing how much you can consume when keeping track. I would suggest keeping a journal. there are several online ones that you can chart your liquids. www.myfitnesspal.com is the one we use. I too took a water pill prior to surgery. Guess what! I have real ankles! I got them about a week after surgery. No more water pill. Keep up your fluids and protein as directed, it will surprise you how your meds will have to be adapted as the weight comes off.

Fluids are very important and it takes a while post op to get them all in. At least for me. I still have to make a conscientious effort to get my fluids in and I am almost 21 weeks.

It took me awhile to drink the required amount of fluid. Within a couple of weeks I could do it with efgort. Now it's easy. You can do it. Just change your habits.
I was on a water pill before surgery and stopped it myself. The doctor put me back on it. I think it depends on you and your body. Let your doctor make that choice

My surgeon said 64 ounces of liquid a day, starting right after surgery. But I could count my protein drinks, coffee, whatever toward those ounces. Of course water is the best.

It's important to keep hydrated. We hear quite a bit about sleeve patients being back in the hospital with dehydration. You don't want that. I especially didn't want that, because seeing my insurance would not cover bariatric surgery, it would also not cover any complications from bariatric surgery. You can bet I did everything I was told.
