Default 11 mile hike in the Smokie Mountains...recommendations needed!!

    Hey Family!!

Alright, so you know I am going to Pigeon Forge this weekend. I just signed up for a 11 mike hike and although I use to ruck march 15 miles with 60 to 80 lbs on my back, that was over 5 years ago. What do I take on a hike lol? Other than layer clothing and my old faithful military boots? I will have a 25 gram protein shake on my way to the meet up point, I am carrying 1 pack of Rap gummies 20 grams protein and 2 Combat bars 20 grams protein. I normally don't eat the gummies or the protein bars because of the carbs, but I think I will need them for this trip.

I need some recommendations, I have pause the packing awaiting comments.

P.S., I am 184 and plan to but that with this hike and maybe shock myself on the scale at 180 lol.

    Thank you!!

    Dreamer,

I don't have any helpful information for you, other than, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! You are truly inspiring. I'm hoping to be doing some hiking myself after I get some weight off. You keep up the good work and have fun on your hike, I envy you.

11 miles? is that a day hike? are you staying overnight?

    1. your military boots are too heavy and won't dry fast if they get wet. you'll need shoes and pants that dry fast.
    2. 2 pair of socks, hang the wet ones on your pack to dry while walking.
    3. 1 liter of water weighs 2.2 pounds. will there be water sources along the trail? if so, just take a one or two liter bottle, and refill along the trail using either a sawyer squeeze or aqua mira drops to purify it.
    4. take as little stuff as possible. you won't even need a huge backpack. if you're staying overnight, you'll need a tarp or tent, but make it a light weight one. If there's no snow and none expected, you can sleep under the stars.

    Hey Pam!!

Thanks for the info, can you tell me more about the shoes? Running shoes or what?

Its not a over night at all, the temp says it will be 43 to 67 while I am out there, so I am wearing 3 layers of polartic gear. I will also be taking a 70 oz water camelback. Not sure about water points right now I need to contact them. I will hydrate I am starting now, but I don't want to drink too much water and have to go all the time out there lol...

Thats an awesome adventure planned . I do know they make shoes that are lightweight and made for hiking. Make sure you have good traction on your feet. I haven't gone on this long of hike since putting weight on but that's about to change. Besides dressing appropriately for the conditions and drinking enough water, make sure you pack appropriate food with you too. Good Luck, Tamera

If you are anywhere near Yosemite National Park, you have to have a hike there! I may be a little bit prejudiced, but I think it's one of the most beautiful places on earth!

    Thanks T,

I will check but I may not have enough time to purchase some and have them shipped. My big concern is taking in so many carbs that day.

I will need to do it since I would have been drinking wine the days prior lol.

You're not going to need all those layers, just sayin'.

There's a zillion kinds of trail shoes. everyone likes different brands depending on their feet and budget. your feet will swell a half size to a size by the end of the day, so if you want to keep hiking in the future, take that into consideration.

def invest in a water purification method, though. 70 oz won't be enough for a day long hike.

Go to REI. Get a backpack that fits (I never knew they came in sizes!) and a water bladder. Get some mid or high-topped water proof hiking boots. (Mine are Merrell from Zappos.com) A good pair or socks. (Again, REI knows what they are doing.) I loved my trekking poles, sort of like 4 wheel drive for your body. (Those I just bought at Walmart for under $20.) HAVE FUN! I so wish I could join you instead of sitting here with a broken neck and 2 broken ribs. I can't even ski with my family in 2 weeks. Pity party! But I will be hiking again by spring.
