Default 47 Days Post-Op and I'm Surprised by How Much I Can Eat

I seem to recall the weight mgmt team stating that post-op I would only be able to consume the equivalent of two ice cubes in one sitting but I can eat quite a bit more than that. Yesterday I went out to eat with my daughter to a mexican restaurant. I ordered a quesadilla which is pretty darn big at this restaurant and though it took me all day (literally) to eat it, I was able to eat it.

Prior to surgery that would have been one meal of many in a day, lol, so I don't intend this by any means to be a whine. Just sharing as I've noticed that there are an array of post-op experiences. Some struggle, some don't. Some get sick, some don't. Some experience A LOT of pain (me, me, me), some don't. Some drop weight like butter on a hot summer day, some slowly lose but indeed lose their weight. Some can't eat more than the equivalent of a couple ice cubes, some can eat chips, salsa and a fair amount of a quesadilla,....... not that there's anything right with that. hehe

I'm one who is slowly losing but very happy with that. I mean it... I'm not just saying that to compensate. I'm really happy with my results.

Then again, chips, salsa and quesadillas are slider foods. Most sleeved people can eat these foods all day and not feel a sense of fullness or satiety. Quesadillas, as tasty as they might be, do not satisfy my hunger that much due to the white flour tortilla that turns into a liquid slurry once we swallow it.

On the other hand, compare the chips and quesadilla to a chicken breast or steak...and you will find that there is no comparison. A few cubes of chicken breast would totally fill up a person like you who is less than two months postoperative.

    Hi Bagawk!

Glad to hear you are doing so well. Congratulations!
I am a newbie. Just had my surgery 4 days ago. I'm having a little bit of trouble getting things down. I can only do small sips. It takes me at least an hour to get 8 ounces of decaf coffee or 8 ounces of protein drink down. It's a little frustrating . . . . . but the doctor said this will pass. Can you share your experience during your first week post op?

Thanks for any wisdom you can give me.

Hi Pam, I just had surgery on 1-24-17. I don't know what instructions your surgeon gave you but it's totally normal to only be able to sip clear liquids for the first weeks. Especially only 4 days into your sleeve. Try to not be discouraged. The reason for only able to sip small sips is in the beginning its from the swelling and inflammation. Also if you have gurgling sounds like your hungry, this isn't hunger pains it's from the inflammation. Taking a pump inhibitor like Nexium twice a day will help. Make sure to get the capsule, you can break it open and swallow content without breaking them. They look like little balls since they are slow release med. Hang in there and try to not be discouraged. It is recommended to not eat empty calories like chips and tortillas. Stay away from high carbs, watch sugar and so on. For best weight loss and in order to get all are nutrition since for one reason we can't it very much so it's important to eat right. But for now it's sipping on clear liquids, from broth, fruit juice that's clear until second week then its full liquid and you will start by adding protein shake, jello, popsicles, decaf coffee and tea ok too. I'd recommend listening to Dr Alvarez YouTube programs. He had many different ones. He answers a lot of great questions regarding the gastric sleeve and does a great job educating people on their recovery from a gastric sleeve etc. I found he's shows very helpful. Good luck Pam. I hope this helps you. Ps Make sure your walking too. This is really helpful and important.

You could prob eat a whole large pizza too, if you take one bite every half hour over the course of a day! That's called grazing and it's what helps us gain weight back!

we're supposed to put a time limit on our meals and stop eating after time is up. Then not eat again until our next scheduled meal or snack.

i admit, I do not eat on a schedule, I'm a horrible grazer, and I know that's a very very bad habit that I need to work on.

I agree that this sounds like an issue of slider foods as RehabNurse said. I would be very cautious of eating foods like that. Especially this early in the game. If I really have a craving, I eat a bite but that's it.

Bagawk!, I know you know all this, but Imma say it anyway ...

Grazing (picking and eating throughout the day on whatever is handy, especially "slider / slurry" foods) is the most sure-fire way to waste a sleeve.

Sure, grazing now can hardly hurt you. Your stomach is still swollen from the surgical trauma it just went through. But it's the grazing HABIT you want to break.

There will come a time, sooner than you think, when you can consume much more by grazing than you just did.

Truly, truly, truly -- the Losing Weight Phase is about much more than letting your much smaller sleeve and the great post-op ghrelin reduction control your behavior. You've got to come with YOUR OWN CONTROLS and build NEW HABITS that will help you maintain your weight loss once you've lost all your excess weight.

And here come the D and M words: Discipline and mindfulness very much apply.

    You can do this, Bagawk!

    Consult: 235 lbs
My and doc's preop diet: 216 -19 lbs

Indeedy do! I blogged it here.

I struggled to get my liquid diet in me as well so you are perfectly normal. As your stomach heals you will have an easier time with it though it will never be like before!

Lots of surgeons recommend taking a 20 mg omeprazole 2x a day for the first 3-6 months post-op to keep swelling down. If you're having that much trouble sipping fluids DEFINITELY make sure you get some anti-acids to reduce the acids (and consequently your swelling).

Congratulations on the start of your new way of living, may it be all you'd hoped and more!
HW: 297+lbs ( stopped weighing myself, it was probably 318 ish)
