I am five weeks out and have gotten to the point where the smell of protein powders make me want to barf! I have little to no hunger. I am hardly eating, not getting enough liquids because I feel nauseated much of the time. Help!

I had major nausea in the beginning along with HORRRRRIBLE heartburn. I was prescribed anti-nausea medication that worked wonders. Talk to your Dr about it. Things that worked for me were: Sugar Free Jello, Getting the premiere protein drinks and making Popsicles out of them helped me. Tea!!! OMG Tea was so easy going down. Chicken Broth with added flavor. You have to find what works for YOU and stick to it. Surprisingly Slim Fast makes a protein powder that has 20 grams, low sugar and fiber in it and it tastes really good. Also I could not get regular water down so My Dr said I could put some fruit juice with water. Regular fruit juice. My choice was Cran Cherry with water and Ice. Sooooooo good. I still drink it till this day. It does get easier. I hope this helped!
I can' only get the premier premade chocolate down.
I can't seem to get down plain water. Dr said crystal light is fine so I put a packet in my 30 ounce water bottle. some days are harder than others to get things down. I can start food this week, but I'm ok with soft foods so I may stay here a little longer.
Just remember, there's no rush to move on to other things.
I don't mean to be silly but what kind of foods are you trying to eat? At 5 weeks, I could barely eat a grand total of 3 tablespoons at a meal. I would measure food in a shot glass (1.5ounces). LOL. Mostly very soft things like cottage cheese and mashed potatoes, maybe canned tuna.
As for protein supplements, I found I could not tolerate the sucralose that just about all of them are made with. They nauseated me. My protein supplement is Genepro unflavored. I do not notice it having any odor at all but when nauseated it might be different. My liquids, other than water, are basically tea and coffee...I can tolerate saccharin but not Splenda (sucralose) or Equal. I became an avid label reader. I am not a fan of plain water but I have an assortment of teas that work well.
You really need to focus on your fluids. 1/2 strength juices are good. (according to my nutritionist) tea, coffee, sugar free of course. broth, jello (preferably sugar free) Keep track of which liquids you can tolerate ...... it may be something in the mix that is upsetting your stomach. At 5 weeks out you could go with creamed soups like tomato or a black bean soup that was blended. stick to the soft and pureed foods until you feel well. You may not ever really feel "hungry" again as a result of the surgery. However, you will learn to recognize some signs you need nourishment. You don't need to rush into eating any particular type of food.... if liquids work stick with them a while... move up slowly.
My surgeon gave me some anti-nausea medication that I used for several weeks post operatively. I would call your surgeon and find out if there is anything they recommend.
Good Luck.
After surgery I had a really hard time drinking protein shakes made with powder. I found that the pre-made protein drinks were much better. The other thing that was helpful was the Atkins protein water which you can find at walmart. Also even though the focus is protein, I found that mashed potatoes with cheese mixed in was very tasty and settled my stomach even if I could only get down a few bites.
Good luck and hope you feel better soon.
Yeah I am almost 14 weeks out and I still can only eat a few tablespoons. At 5 weeks I would take a bite and chew thoroughly, then give it a little time before I had more. You really do fill up super fast and it is soooooo easy to overeat. I still get queasy sometimes from the protein shakes. It is weird. And back then I would drink warm liquids like tea as they went down so much easier than water.
It turns out my blood sugar levels had dropped to very low levels and I had become hypoglycemic. I ended up back in the hospital for a couple of days to get my blood sugar levels back on track. Now, I poke my finger a few times a day and if they are low, drink a little apple juice. Totally feeling better! the low sugar level is what was causing the nausea. Weird!
