    Default Miss Positivity is Bummed!

So somehow I fell down my stairs and fractured the C2 vertebrae in my neck. I am SO VERY LUCKY I was not paralyzed, but just have to wear a neck brace for 30 days with NO EXERCISE. Not even walking except around the house. I just might die. Or get fat. I can go back to work next week, but unless I feel better I may not. Nurses out there, tell me why the send people home from the hospital with no pain meds? Because we would get addicted or sell it? I broke my neck and was told to take Tylenol. Ya, that will help. Not.

We have an expensive ski trip planned for 2 weeks from now. My favorite thing in the world. I should be happy my hubby, sons, and grandson will have fun, but I'm too busy feeling sorry for myself.

Plus I came home from the hospital after eating about nothing with a 5 pound weight gain. Tell me it's the IV fluids, that would make me feel better. Or maybe it's lying in bed for 2 days. I am going to have to be so careful with what I eat these next 30 days. With my love of exercise I have never had to be that careful.

I remember nothing about the fall, don't remember the paramedics in my home or the ride to the hospital. I couldn't tell the paramedics my age or the president. (Hubby said I was really tying to think hard!!)

    Life happens, doesn't it?

Indeed IV makes you gain weight, I came back from the hospital post sleeve with 5 more pounds too!
That should be the last of your worries! you're so lucky it's not more serious! I hope you can find a good pain killer!
Take it easy.... 30 days is nothing, I was in bed rest for 6 months for one of my kid. Sick like a dog, actually lost weight
Anyway, best wishes for an easy recovery! take care!

Hi! I'm so, so sorry this happened to you! Yes, you're right, life happens sometimes. I can't believe they sent you home without pain meds, that's cruel! That's a serious event, and I would think they'd give you Percocet or something. I'm really sorry . I understand your disappointment regarding your upcoming ski trip, that's a bummer. Can you still go and hang out with your family? Maybe you can have some good family time and visit with your family in a way you wouldn't be able to otherwise. I sure hope you can go, and you can still enjoy yourself. I totally understand why you're bummed out though. Hang in there, and I'll be praying for you. Try to enjoy yourself on your trip! Cheers, Patti

Miss Positivity -- yes, it's IV fluids.

But I'm truly sorry to hear about your fall and your 30-day enforced inactivity prescription.

Yeah, I'd definitely cut back on calories while you can't walk a lot. I know you aren't a tracker. But maybe this would be a good time to do so -- just temporarily?

And I could hook you up with pain meds, due to hubby's intermittent cancer treatments. But that would be illegal.

I am so sorry this happened to you! You are truly blessed not to have been paralyzed! I'm sure the IVs are the root of the weight gain and it'll be gone soon. Thirty days should go quickly, and you'll be back in the swing of things.

Sorry to hear about your accident and glad it's not a permanent injury. Thirty days may feel like a lifetime but will go by fast. Can you go on the trip and watch the rest of the family ski? Sit by the fireplace and relax.

Made me laugh Ann! I will start tracking. Never needed to, but now I sure will. And I'll go on the ski trip to hang out with my hubby, sons and adorable snowboarding grandson. At least I will get to see the mountains!

It has to be the IV's, because it happened in the evening, I hadn't eaten since lunch, and seeing they were considering surgery I didn't eat for about 24 hours. Then I had 2 eggs and couldn't even eat them. (Maybe those IV things are full of SUGAR!) But you're right, I came very close to being paralyzed with the C2 fracture, so I am blessed that I'll be fine. Unless I try to ski, which I won't. My helmet wouldn't fit over my neck brace.

Agh!! That had to be so scary for you all. I am so glad you are relatively ok. And I know how you feel. I love my exercise time. If I could not do it I would feel frustrated too. And then to have the ski trip in 2 weeks. But regardless of all that, you really did get lucky. It could have been so much worse. Big, big hugs!!

Blessing to you and glad you're ok. This hiccup is small potatoes compared to the long journey forward. We will be here for ya every step of the way. I too, fractured my neck....all 350 pounds of me landed on my neck during a soccer game. I didn't sleep for a month and wanted to die. A cortisone shot with a 20 inch needle saved my life. Holla if you need some lovin or a swift kick in the ass....Ann2 will do that for ya!!!hahaha

Yep, trying to sleep in a cervical collar is almost impossible. Not to mention trying to move in bed, because not only does my head and neck hurt, I must have pulled a muscle in my back which is my worst pain. So trying to roll over really hurts! Hubby put my recliner in front of the TV, maybe I'll try to sleep there. Yes, I know Ann is here to help!!

some IV fluids DO have sugar in them.

    What’s in an IV?

    • Salt. The most commonly used fluid is normal saline. This is a salt solution of purified water. You can’t have plain water going into your veins. All the existing salt in your body, which you need, would rush out of cells and tissues where it is needed — not a good thing! Normal saline approximates the ratio of salt to water that exists naturally in the human body.
    • Sugar. Sometimes the doctor will choose a dextrose, or sugar solution, that also contains salt. If you see “D5” written on the bag, that means sugar. These fluids are OK for people who do not have diabetes and who are not terribly dehydrated. If you have a bad infection, the doctor might not want to use D5, in order to keep your blood sugars well controlled to discourage the infection.
    • Electrolytes. Some fluids may contain these minerals. One particular solution, for example, combines saline with bicarbonate, sugar and potassium. This is one of the preferred fluids for surgeries, likely because surgery can alter your electrolyte and acid-base balance.
