    Default Pre-Op Diet

I just received a tentative date, 2//28, and am super excited. I'm hoping and praying that my insurance approves it. I guess I cut to the chase, I received my pre-op diet and was pleasantly surprised that I don't have to do the liquid diet. My diet seems to be pretty easy, eat every 4 hours, 6-8ozs of protein and veggies, did anyone else do a diet similar to this?

Hi. I didn't have a liquid diet pre-op either. Only post op (everyone does).
I actually worried a little bit because I didn't have one when it seems like everyone else does.

That's my fear too because 2 people that went to the same surgeon, as late as 5 months ago did a liquid diet. I've researched though but my diet is common so i'm not going to worry too much about it.

    Thanks.

Hi, I was put on a 5 day pre-op diet that consisted of a protein drink for breakfast and lunch then a few bites of lean protein and veggies. Apparently the lean protein helps shrek your liver along with no sugar. Hope this helps.

Most of the proteins you will take in are going to be in shake form with some protein bars mixed in. And you have to watch the portion size to make sure you don't go over a single portion. Then the hard part, nothing with more than 3g of sugar per serving.

I did have a pre-op diet. But it was only for three days and not the 2 weeks that I have read that some of the others had to go through. I did start watching what I was eating and tried to do liquids some days just to mentally prepare myself. To me it was better to know what I was going to have to go through before it happened. I would say it definitely prepared me. Premiere Protein worked for me. You taste buds do change. So don't stock up on things. Best of luck to you!

Every surgeon is different. I did 6 days of replacing 2 meals with a shake and having 1 meal with lean meat and veggies. Then I had to do 3 days of all liquids. My surgeon stated that having no food particles in my stomach would help prevent infection. That was his reasoning.

my surgeon, three days before surgery has you take a laxative then start clear liquid diet. This ensures your stomach and intestines are clear. I know every doctor is different and the preop days depends on your weight too i think. Good luck. Glad i could help. Would love to hear how everything goes.

My pre-op diet was 14 days consisted of 5 shakes a day plus one serving of veggie, fruit and 1 starch. To be honest this made my first 3 weeks post-op very easy to handle as I was already used to the shakes. After the 2nd week being able to incorporate soft foods has been joyful. Still can't eat enough protein on my own so I find myself having 1 shake a day to reach my protein goal. 5 more weeks of this before I graduate to more solid foods if my stomach is ready for them.
