Smile The Year of the "Tom"

I have designated 2017 as the year of the "Tom" to get my life back. I started the process to have VSG surgery about 5 months ago and my surgery date is finally near! 2/14/17, Valentine’s Day! My wife was a little annoyed but once I explained to her that this is a gift not only for myself but for her as well she is now completely on board. Plus, I told her next year on this date I will take her on a vacation!

I am a 47 year old male and weighed in at 478 pounds 5 months ago. Fortunately, aside from some back and hip issues I have been blessed with relative good health. My primary doc says I am a perfect candidate for this surgery. My goal is to get back to 225 pounds with a stretch goal of 200. I played college football at 217 so that's what I am shooting for...

I know this is only a tool but believe it is the perfect tool for me as my main issues have been binge eating on the weekends and sometimes at night. I don't graze all day. Portion control has been my main challenge and with my hips/back I have been sedentary for the past 2 years so have ballooned from 340 pounds (which was still too large).

I am on day 3 of the pre-op liquid diet. Only protein shakes, broth, sugar free non-carb drinks, water and sugar free gelatin. So far, not too difficult. Have noticed I am urinating quite a bit which appears to be common as the body goes into Ketosis and the body starts to shed excess water. For anyone struggling, I find that following the plan and not skipping/missing a drink is very helpful with curbing appetite.

I don't see many men on this forum so would certainly appreciate feedback from a man's perspective regarding their journey. I also find the women's journey's intriguing as well ladies so please don't take this as being sexist and certainly would welcome any feedback from you as well!

I wish everyone who has just started their journey, close to surgery or post-surgery all the best with health and happiness.

    Wish me luck!

I will post regularly regarding my experience.

Congratulations on deciding to change your life!!! You won't regret it. (I'm 3 weeks post-op and am really starting to FEEL the changes; physically and socially/emotionally etc)

Here's a really cool guy I think you should subscribe to on Youtube. He's a really good guy who has the same issue you do; not enough men talking about this. He's fun to watch and encouraging. Also, he's good at responding if you actually message him. He's also on instagram, etc. Hope this helps

Love me some Trailer Park Boys. Good Luck. I had some hiccups in the beginning but I am so happy with the results. Just remember to get out and walk as much as you can. Your hips and back will begin to love you.

I love the idea of the "Year of Tom", good plan!! I wish you continued success on your journey and look forward to updates. You seem to have a sense of humor, which helps greatly along the journey! Also, I agree that pushing yourself a little farther each day is a great motivator, who knows what it will lead you to...
