I have designated 2017 as the year of the "Tom" to get my life back. I started the process to have VSG surgery about 5 months ago and my surgery date is finally near! 2/14/17, Valentine’s Day! My wife was a little annoyed but once I explained to her that this is a gift not only for myself but for her as well she is now completely on board. Plus, I told her next year on this date I will take her on a vacation!
I am a 47 year old male and weighed in at 478 pounds 5 months ago. Fortunately, aside from some back and hip issues I have been blessed with relative good health. My primary doc says I am a perfect candidate for this surgery. My goal is to get back to 225 pounds with a stretch goal of 200. I played college football at 217 so that's what I am shooting for...
I know this is only a tool but believe it is the perfect tool for me as my main issues have been binge eating on the weekends and sometimes at night. I don't graze all day. Portion control has been my main challenge and with my hips/back I have been sedentary for the past 2 years so have ballooned from 340 pounds (which was still too large).
I am on day 3 of the pre-op liquid diet. Only protein shakes, broth, sugar free non-carb drinks, water and sugar free gelatin. So far, not too difficult. Have noticed I am urinating quite a bit which appears to be common as the body goes into Ketosis and the body starts to shed excess water. For anyone struggling, I find that following the plan and not skipping/missing a drink is very helpful with curbing appetite.
I don't see many men on this forum so would certainly appreciate feedback from a man's perspective regarding their journey. I also find the women's journey's intriguing as well ladies so please don't take this as being sexist and certainly would welcome any feedback from you as well!
I wish everyone who has just started their journey, close to surgery or post-surgery all the best with health and happiness.
Wish me luck!
I will post regularly regarding my experience.
