Default Having VSG later this year!

Hi! My name is Angela and my husband and I are in the process of getting approved for the gastric sleeve. I'm 38 and have been overweight pretty much my entire adult life. I also have type 2 diabetes that I had been able to control with diet and exercise. I just recently had to add oral medication. I'm on glipizide, because I just couldn't tolerate the side effects of metformin. I have been thinking of having weight loss surgery for a long time now and I decided now was the time. When I talked it over with my husband, he decided he wanted to go through the process as well. He has sleep apnea and bulging discs in his lower back and losing weight will help both of those problems.
So far, we've met with the surgical PA and the NUT. We've also both had ultrasounds of our gallbladders to check for stones and I also had a barium swallow (we have different surgeons in the same practice). I also have to have a sleep study done to see if I also have sleep apnea. Up next for both of us is the behavioral assesment and a follow-up with the NUT.

We are going to have our surgeries at least a month apart, since we have a toddler at home and not a lot of help around. We've also started making small changes to how we eat in preparation for the big changes to come. I'm a little nervous about the surgery, but mostly excited to get on the other side. I'm so tired of feeling tired and not being able to keep up with our daughter. She deserves to have healthy parents and hopefully this process will help give her that.

    Welcome Angela!
I think it's so great that your husband and you are doing the surgery together. Even one month apart, it will be so much easier for support and understanding each other's needs! And also great that you will both change your diet together for good! You are right to do it now! I only wish I had done it sooner!
It's not always a walk in the park, my first weeks post-op were not easy but I'm so happy about the result!
    Best wishes! take care!

    Hi Angela and hubby! Welcome!

Having you both on the same page is fantastic! I just had mine done JAN5 and I'm 58! I so wish I had done it 15 years ago. But since then the procedure has super improved especially with the sleeve and so much safer.

Congratulations on your journey! I learned a lot from everyone here. So much more than what the surgeon's team told me. Topics they don't talk about , but they bring them up here!! LOL

Hi Angela, welcome to the board! Having surgery a month apart with a toddler at home is probably a good idea. My Dr gave me a ten pound lifting restriction for weeks. I have a 9 year old that still likes to sit on my lap and have "morning snuggles" every day. Not doing that has been the hardest part. Still worth it as it's only temporary. I feel comfortable letting her sit on me now and it hasn't even been two weeks. It will be nice to have someone to go through it with. My cousin and her husband did it together and both have had great success.

Congrats on your decisions to get sleeved! It is a huge step. Are you both going through your insurance? Just be sure to find out all the requirements. It is easier when you know what the expectation from your insurance is. (Less stressful!) Good luck!

That's awesome that you and your husband can help each other through the journey. It will great to support each other. If you follow the program, your child will have two healthy parents that will model their future, quite a legacy to pass on. Good luck

We are both going through insurance. Luckily, DH is a state employee, so his benefits are pretty generous and our surgeons' office is knows our plan, so we should be all set in that regard. DH qualifies based on his BMI and also sleep apnea. I qualify because of my diabetes. So now we are just jumping through all the hoops and wishing the weeks would go by faster!
