    Default Exercise help

    Hi all,

I really need help in getting info for exercise or at least to find out what people are doing with my stupid schedule.

I wake up M - F at 5 am and am out of the house by 6 am for my 2 hr commute
I rarely leave my office for lunch but could if I pushed myself to forget about it for 30 or 45 mins
I leave work at 4:30 pm and get home around 7 pm
It's dark when I leave and when I get home
Dinner is followed by a shower, seeing my husband and getting into bed by 9 pm

I'm trying to fit a 20 mins weight workout when I get home that that is not happening every night.

On the weekends I usually get some jogging/walking with the dog time, gardening & cleaning done but frankly it's not enough.

I don't know what to do with my hrs, do I stay up later during the week to get more exercise in.

Need some ideas, once it gets light outside I can do more after I get home but now it's barely anything

I completely understand the difficulty in planning exercise time when life is too busy. I am a RN and have to be at work by 5:45 am I don't get home rarely before 7:30 - 8:30 pm. At the end of the day by the time I see family and do miscellaneous things it's bedtime. I found the ONLY way I could get my exercise in is to get up at 3:45 am to do a good work out. Otherwise I blow it off because I am too tired when I get home. That was the schedule I was on until I had surgery. Laying off exercising now until I am released. Good Luck!

Good subject! I get up at 4am and arrive home around 5pm. My only way that I'll be able to work out is ON THE WAY home. Once home I won't be going back put. I haven't been released yet, so right now just walking.

    Four hours commuting per day?!

    Boy, that's a big build-a-healthier-lifestyle challenge.

Really sorry you have to do that.

It's no wonder you have a hard time. You have a crazy schedule with that long commute. I get up at 530 and am at work by 7. I leave work at 530 and am home by 6. I do my work out right away and then dinner and relaxation time. I don't work as many hours as you and I work about 2 hours of overtime everyday. I don't know how you manage. I wish I could give you good advice but it seems to me that you are stretched pretty slim. Is your hubby interested in working out with you? If it is something that you can do together than it could be liking 2 birds 1 stone? Other than that, I don't know what to suggest. You have a crazy long day my friend.

I did the fours hours commuting a few year ago, and will probably do it again at some point because we work in the capital but live in the countryside when we are back home. It is hard!
The only way for me to exercise was to either walk during my lunch break or walk instead of taking the metro back to the main train station, so sometimes I would just get out two stations before.
It takes a toll on our bodies, no doubts. For some reason it's even harder on women because my husband was not that tired. I think it's important to get enough sleep and if you want to exercise, may be do it right before your shower in the morning. May be just ten minutes each morning because in the evening it's just too difficult to find the motivation, you will be too tired.
I remember from that time that the worst was the "always hungry feeling" because I was so tired and sleep deprived (one of the kid was a sleepless baby for two years right during that period of time).
Two small bags of almonds for morning and afternoon snacks did help at the time. And carry my green tea too...
In the morning (I'm not a morning person) I used a special "day light" lamp for 15 minutes, it's intense, that was supposed to boost my mood and avoid the winter blues...I did see some improvement, or may be it was just in my head ;-) but I will use it again if I have to get up at 5 AM again. Living and coming back in the dark is not good for our brains...
I know that I will try to manage my schedule in an other way if we go back home this Summer, I'm planning on working only four days a week with Wednesday off to stay with the kids. Hopefully my work load will make it possible...

Until last year, I did the same commute. I was out the door by 5:30 AM to get the train to the Metro to the bus to the office and back. If I did not go to the gym before coming home it never happened. When I got home from the gym I had to start classwork for my Bachelors degree after getting home at 7 PM. Most weekends I spent working on my classes. Fortunately, my wife was very supportive of all my needs, and they are all needs. You must set aside time for your needs because you will not be able to affect the type of change you want without being very selfish when it comes to your needs.

If you cant get to the gym or out to walk, buy some resistance bands and do some movement while watching TV before bed. Get a WII and play some active games with the kids or hubby to include them if the kids are still around.

Thanks for all the posts, which actually made me look at my day to day hours and forced me to take time for myself, why is that always so hard, lol? Well, got out of my office and took a 30 minute brisk walk; also setting my alarm to go off at 4:15 am so that I can knock out a 20 min workout before starting the day.

Now to address my long commute - that won't be changing unless I win the lotto, drop dead or retire - there are no jobs near my home that pays what I'm making, so I'm stuck doing the commute. I don't really mind it other than sitting on my butt for 2 hrs, I actually read and either relax starting my day or decompress at the end of the day. Also, I have 10 acres to enjoy when it get light out and no neighbors so that in itself is a reward for myself and my husband.
