Default Newbie to Gastric Sleeve surgery

I just came across this site today on the internet and was reading some of the posts. I would like to consider getting the surgery but kept reading about complications regarding "leaks". What exactly does that mean to get a leak after or during surgery? Is that standard or does it only happen to some of the patients. Also, isn't it kind of risky to go to another country to get it done instead of getting it done in the U.S.? Are you also dependent on pills for the rest of your life once the surgery is done? I hope to hear from several of you regarding this post to let me know if I should get it done or not. Thanks

I am 61 years old, and do not regret this for one moment. I have not really heard of anyone having a leak. I take multivitamins every day and one Pepcid. So I do not consider this to be much. My doctor did not advise any other pills unless I showed a deficiency, which I have not. I have lost 32 pounds so far and it feels so good. Your meals will be tiny and initially to get all your protein you will drink protein shakes. I now drink one a day to get everything I need. You need to drink water like crazy. I mean a water bottle with you at all times. I did not go out of the country for the surgery, but MANY people do with good results. I'm sure many will respond. Good luck with your decision!

A leak is where you are leaking fluid out of what is your new stomach. They do a test to check for leaks before you are discharged from the hospital. My surgeon talked to me in depth about this prior to surgery. He hasn't had a patient experience a leak, but he still went into detail about it and the risks.
If you experience a leak you will likely need surgery to repair it.

The sleeve has very low complication rates. It is considered a very safe surgery. All surgeries pose a risk, however, so there is always a possibility. Here is a helpful link that goes over the complication rates for the sleeve. http://www.obesitycoverage.com/uncom...complications/

Hi, and welcome! You will find a wealth of information here, and it will help you make an informed decision regarding weight loss surgery. I am one of the MANY folks going to Mexico for surgery. A good outcome isn't dependent on the country you have your surgery in, but the skill and experience of your surgeon. My doctor, Dr. Almanza, is very well known in the sleeve community. He and his partner, Dr. Hernandez, have performed many thousands of gastric sleeve surgeries, and I feel confident going through them and their hospital for my procedure. I personally know five people who have gone through Weight Loss Agents, who represent and schedule for these docs, and all of them have had positive experiences and excellent outcomes with no problems.

Weight loss surgery is a very personal decision for anyone. I truly believe you can learn so much here on these forums, and it will help you make the right decision for you. Everyone here is helpful and kind, and we welcome you here. Good luck with your research and eventual decision.
It's never too late to be what you might have been . . .
