    Default Best protein shakes?

    Hi everyone!
I still have a while to go before I start my pre-op liquid diet, but I've been trying out several different protein shakes in preparation. Also, a friend of mine is having her surgery later this month, so I've been kind of sticking to a liquid diet as well to support her. I've tried several different protein shakes and these are my top choices:
    1. GNC Lean shake, it has about 25 grams of protein for shake, and the serving size is big! They also make it in ready to drink bottles, which is convenient. I like the vanilla bean, the chocolate one gave me heartburn. They have several other flavors and you can also buy the kind you mix up.
    2. Wonder Slim protein shakes. I've been a fan of these for years, they are so smooth and creamy! The only downfall is that they only have around 15 grams of protein.
    3. Ensure high protein. Nothing much to say here, except the are quick and convenient (and don't taste too bad).

The weight loss clinic I go to recommends the brand they sell there, but I can't remember what it is called now though... If you don't buy the product directly from them, then they recommend the GNC Lean shake, Ensure high protein, or Glucerna (which I haven't tried yet).

What are your favorite choices for protein shakes and items you can eat during your pre-op liquid diet? Also do you mix your shakes with water or something a bit more, like almond milk?

    Thanks!
    Dee

I like the premier protein shakes. They come in a juice box like carton. I get them at costco $24 for 18. the chocolate taste like chocolate milk. I think they are also a decent price on jet.com I did get a sample from my Dr office to try before I purchased. I don't like the taste of most protein shakes, but this one is good and smooth.

Ensure is on the list of do not use from my surgeon.

Have you tried making homemade protein shakes? You really can't beat the taste and quality!

Things I learned about protein supplements they are not all made alike. There are three milk by-product proteins: whey concentrate (poor quality), whey isolate (best quality, fast absorbing) and Casein whey (highest quality, slow absorbing and it's recommended you take it before bedtime when you are the least likely to spend energy.) There is also collagen protein, and I wouldn't recommend it to Bari patients because it marketet to assist skin and joints health, but medical studies I read you would have to take it long term to see results. Eat wild caught salmon and you will get same benefits. Oh there is also Goat milk protein which is supposed to be a high quality protein, because goat milk is closest to human milk. It tastes ok.

There is also pure egg-white protein, which I am currently a huge fan of and I am using to supplement.

There are vegan proteins made from different sources but most common is soy, (I had one I hated), there is also hempseed protein, and pea proteins. I have tried Raw Fit and it tastes grainy, but I got to like it a lot! Because it saved me from wanting to eat my own hand post op. I was sooo hungry all the time.

Most importantly you can get a delicious tasting protein shake from blending a cup greek yogurt, a cup of milk, 1 raw egg, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter or almond butter, 1 banana and a touch of honey. If you feel adventurous add a cup of power greens (kale, spinach, chard).

I use protein powders and unsweetened vanilla almond milk to make my shakes. I like the self made is much better in taste and texture and the almond milk put it over the top. Almost five months out and I still have one a day to supplement protein intake. I use EAS Whey isolate and Muscle Milk Whey Isolate in Chocolate and Vanilla respectively. For a change in flavor add in PB2 for peanut butter flavor or blend in fruit in small amounts because of the sugar.

I use Premier Protein shakes. They sell them at Costco and right now they are on sale for $19.99 for a pack of 24. (I love Banana, Chocolate, and Vanilla. I used to like the Strawberry, but I can no longer tolerate it.)I also use the Slimfast High protein, low carb, high fiber powder. ( Comes in Chocolate, Strawberry, and vanilla)

Everything else has a funky taste to it to me. Also remember that things that taste amazing to you know might not taste that great after surgery.

I drink one or 2 of allmax isoflex a day . Tastes really good and the stats on it are great. 115 calories 0 fat 1 carb 27 grams on protein on 30 gram servings.
Chocolate is good but the chocolate peanut butter is my fav but it adds 5 calories and like 1 more carb due to the peanut powder.
