I totally relate!
I cut off caffeine for about six weeks post op, and it started sipping here and there about a month post op. I drink about two cup servings nowadays, I really do hope it doesn't go beyond that. I have a complete different reaction to coffee, it helps me relax and I don't drink it as a pick me up, I haven't added cream or sugar for years either. I think of coffee as a security blanket or it's drinking something warm or maybe it's the grasping of something in my hand??? I like that I am not as dependent on either as before.

"Today is another day to get it right!"
That is how I feel about coffee. I could drink a cup and go to bed. It is not a pick me up, it's a comfort thing. With temps in the teens and a foot of snow on the ground, a nice warm comfort is welcoming. An extra pureed egg in the morning might be nice too, plus it has protein, but that's a conversation for another time.
I also drink coffee because I like it and can also drink it right before bed and go to sleep with no problems. I grew up in Italy so we would drink coffee several times a day. I have just one cup every day since I have cut down since surgery. And I used to drink a venti (a few times a day) but now just a tall once a day. Progress. LOL.
Bariwise on Amazon offers a hot chocolate with 15g of protein. It is a bit pricey for a box of 7 packets but I take it to work as a treat. They also have soup, the cream of tomato is excellent and had 15g protein for the 1 packet.
I like to heat up 8oz of Fairlife milk (13g protein) and add a bit of vanilla and a splenda packet then the coffee. It is so good.

Just buy Hershey's cocoa powder (the one for baking) make the hot chocolate according to package directions and substitute the sugar for your favorite low cal sweetner. I tossed in a 1/2 scoop of my protein powder to up the protein intake. I've been doing this diet long before my surgery.
Bariatric Pal has hot chocolate mixes with high protein. I too love the smell of coffee but not the taste. I will drink a cappuccino made with our Keurig. I'm only 6 weeks out and am not to consume caffeine for 3-6 months. I MISS my Diet Coke! I loved it but I know it's not good for me.
I used to be a diet Dr. Pepper addict. I mean I drank a lot of them. It would take me no time at all to chug down a can. I have not had any since my pre op diet. I don't miss it one bit. I will not go back to soda as I was told by my nutritionist to not drink it. Also carbonated drinks will bloat your tummy. No thanks!
I ordered a sampler pack from Bariatric Pal of "coffees" they aren't bad at all - no caff in them, but def ok. I do coffee as well reg and/or decaf - sometimes I add a scoop of protein powder with skim plus milk and make a latte that gives me the extra protein.
I was never told I couldn't drink coffee.
