In his first book "why we get fat" the writer (who's a journalist) was mainly investigating why people got fat during the last decades, when the USDA was advising for the food pyramid with 45% carbs, everybody was getting bigger.
Here it's about how the food industry was pushing sugar against fat for so long...sugar is everywhere in salad dressing, ketchup etc...it's not just pure sugar, it's also hidden sugar in food where it should not be..but I haven't finish the book yet.
I had some really bad craving around month 6. I realized it was related to my iron being too low again. I was craving sweet/chocolate. But I was hungry too.
I usually have some issues one week per month before TMO but this time it was different because it was not the right week and it was really intense. Like never before.
I decided to get sweets, track it and see what happened. I also took mega dose of iron and had protein with it. It did calm down but took several days.
My next blood test was a few days later and my surgeon agreed with my theory because my iron was pretty low even with everything I took the few days before the blood test. SO the day of the cravings I must have been extremely deficient again...
My surgeon also had a theory about the fact that my body was trying to regain weight and was fighting the weight loss...I think he was right.
In November when I was taking my asthma medication for almost one full month I had cravings too, not as bad as month 6 but still...I didn't indulge that time because the medication could make me gain weight and fast, it did go away, I didn't gain anything but that was hard.

I little to no taste for sweet things. My normals just don't taste the same, I have tried some just to test. Sodas are all terrible now. Candies don't taste the same. Knock on wood, sweets are not an issue now. The longer you can avoid them the more your taste buds will change and the more intolerant you will be to the taste of sugar, even fake sugars.
After nearly 2.5 years post-op my experience has been that the more sugar I eat the more I like it.
I don't exclude it from my diet, but I certainly do NOT splurge on it. Thus far, when my scale goes up, sugar is the first thing I cut way back on or exclude!
IMHO some can't handle sugar at all. For various medical and psychological factors they're just highly sensitive to it. Others can take it or leave it. Others (like me) can handle it sometimes, but not others.
I think everyone has to really, really, really understand what effects sugar has on them individually. And then take personal responsibility for eating in a way that doesn't put their weight loss or maintenance at risk.
My advice: Know *your* limits and respect them.

I am a sugar addict. I am very sensitive to it and can quickly slide back to old habits so I stay away as best I can.
